I phoned a local garage that I took it to for oil change before, and it has been recommended. They recommended the local Mr Clutch! Seems they can't be bothered with the difficult jobs - so my friend told me after I told him of this.

Hmm. I'm going to get in touch with another guy who is highly recommended.

I am wondering how urgent it is? I could do with leaving it a week or two but it is not very pleasant driving it like this. Just feels sluggish but not dangerous though I got a few rude gestures the other day. There are so many impatient drivers out there - so yes it is a bit slow at times but no need to be so rude!;)

Don't continue to drive it. As the friction plate wears more - and the more it slips, the faster it'll wear - that it'll do damage to the flywheel's face.

So you may find that from a simple clutch change, you'll need the flywheel to go to a machine shop for refacing.
  • That's possible but usually the linings just burn and slip before they wear out or the pressure plate becomes weak. However a slipping clutch could turn into a 'not useable at all' clutch at any moment so be warned if you do continue to use it you might break down.

Thanks Adrian and Ed. I work from home a lot so can avoid using it too much in the meantime - maybe two 30 mile journeys next week.
I'm trying to get in touch with the recommended mechanic but looking online quotes for a new clutch fitted are around £500 so I will just have to bite the bullet.

It is an 06 plate Hyundai Coupe and otherwise seems sound - for a moment I considered getting rid but I would still need to spend about £1k at least on something else. I do wonder about my driving but maybe it is just wear and tear. I had a habit of coasting a bit with clutch down when I was learning to drive, instructor kept telling me off. This car has been in London the whole time and now does frequently journeys in heavy traffic so maybe it's done ok if it is the original clutch (not much service history so don't even know).

My Hyundai Coupe is in a local garage now. They quoted me £400 for clutch replacement then phoned to say the flywheel is very uneven so asked for authorisation to smooth it as there is little point in new clutch with it so uneven. So another £79 plus VAT but the mechanic thinks it is the original clutch on the car - done 118,00 miles (35000 since I owned it) and also that doesn't look like caused by riding the clutch, thankfully though it has been tricky to drive and juddery so hopefully it will feel like a new machine!

So I've been quite lucky given that I bought it for £1300 with virtually no service history, and have only had to change the cambelt as I had no idea when that was due.

    Hi

Just wanted to note my thanks and report back that the Coupe is handling brilliantly now. So much has improved after new clutch, I realise it was probably going ever since I've had the car, over two years ago! It's like a new car now, and so much easier to manoeuvre in and out of parking spaces, stopping on a hill and hill start, accelerates well and is really quite nippy! Didn't expect such an amazing result. I liked the garage I dealt with so will use them again and they are so local.

Hi back to the MOT - a pass thankfully this year, but advisories of one rear tyre 'slightly damaged/cracking or perishing Nearside Rear Inner' which he said doesn't need immediate attention. Also 'Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases Front - this may tie in with last year's advisory of flexi joint in need of repair, which I did nothing about. As there is a leak of gases should I do something about it? Thanks
  • If it was serious; it would have failed. So long as you aren't smelling exhaust fumes you can leave it.

‘Emissions’ warning light came on yesterday. Yellow square symbol -  Will monitor. I’m rarely using car at moment but may occasionally need to drive in to work soon.

Engine warning light - that’s what I should have said.🙂
