Another advantage of the 3 Data Sim is that you only need to top up a minimum of 2 quid (not 5 or 10).

It's not a requirement - you can keep NO balance if you want, but if you did need it for an emergency call, then best to keep 2 quid on balance.

I think the data sims simply need to show some "data activity" every 6 months - even FREE data activity.

I got a free SIM fromThree, although I'm not sure if it has a specific name (eg data SIM)

I put it in the phone and tested it ... at least it can receive calls OK

As you said, in case of an emergency, I'll add some credit to it. Not sure how at this stage, but there's a Three shop nearby, so I can ask there.

After reading this thread I just got one of these Data Reward SIMs to replace my standard 3 PAYG SIM. I don't use very much mobile data but it will now save me the £2 a month I was spending on data on my standard SIM.

Be careful to set up your account for the SIM using the same device with the SIM inserted, so not separately on a laptop for example, otherwise it may not register properly for the free monthly data.

Yes, I set it up in my current phone and all it's registered ok for the 200MB/month. I did set up my online Three account via PC though and that's all OK too.

Does anyone know whether the chargeable call every six months requirement with O2 Classic 3-2-1 could be replaced with text (Or data) for instance ?

The condition with *some* networks, (maybe all) was that a 'chargeable event' had to occur every X months/days.
That 'chargeable event could be an incoming call perhaps???

Only if that is a cost to the SIM holder, text out does count because it costs money
Test out to another phone is what I use

  • I've been using Smarty's PAYG SIM for over a year now and love it. My 'bill' (subscription based) is never more than £7.50 (usually less as they discount for unused data) and has everything I need with great reception. My tariff includes unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 2GB data but there are others - both smaller and larger - available depending on your usage.

Hi all Thank you for reply.
    From O2 T&C
    https://www.o2.co.uk/termsandconditions/mobile/on-pay-and-go-our-service-terms-are-worth-a-read#bm-our-rights-to-bar-or-disconnect-your-mobile-phone

"7.1. If you do not carry out any chargeable activity at least once in any 6 month period your Mobile Phone will be disconnected and you will lose any remaining credits balance on your Account."

From this T&C only chargeable activities is required. There is not any specific requirement for chargeable call. So based on this T&C, using 1 min data for the cost of 1p at least once every six months should do the job.

Has anyone actually tried this ???

Yes, any chargeable activity including data usage will work.
