If the OP is not going to be making many/any calls, then perhaps the best thing would to be to chose the network that provides the best coverage where he/she is.

Podcasts can be downloaded to the phone (using WiFi) and then listened to offline later.

As d123 just said .. I can download the podcasts while at home, then listen while out walking / gardening or whatever.

I use the app 'Podkicker' for Android which seems great and easy to operate. You can listen directly or download for later. Downloaded podcasts automatically delete after being listened to.

I do isten to the radio sometimes too, so thanks for that

And with O2 Classic PAYG you do have to make a chargeable call every 6 months to keep the number alive.
MSE says "you'll have to top up with a minimum of £10 every six months to keep it active" - a big difference, if this is correct.

No. Just a chargeable event every 180 days.

Well, I've been with them for over two years now and have only topped up once with £10.

If you look through their community pages, this does seem to be a grey area.

I asked o2 a while ago, they confirmed the top up info on the webpage is wrong and the T&C’s are correct, hence MSE are incorrect.
We do state in our service T&C’s that chargeable activity must be carried out at least once in a six month period to prevent your account from being disconnected. If this happens, then any unused credit will be lost and we’re not required to reconnect your account or to refund your lost credit. All of our new and existing customers have to adhere to these T&C’s to use our service.

I can see that our Classic Pay and Go webpage incorrectly states that you need to top-up or purchase a bolt-on at least once within a six month period. However, I’m unable to confirm why this hasn’t been corrected

Our Classic Pay and Go T&C’s does not mention that you need to purchase a top-up or bolt-on at least once within a six month period.

Three PAYG data reward sim is probably the cheapest

    Free
    321 tariff
    200mb data a month free.

    https://www.three.co.uk/Free_SIM_MBB/Order
I think this is ideal for low usage or a spare phone. The link allows you to order the free SIM without paying for an initial top-up, if it still works - it's no longer visible (to me anyway) on the Three website. Although classed as a data SIM, it has a phone number which can be called, uses the normal 321 PAYG tariff, and the monthly free 200MB data add-on qualifies it for the 'Go Roam' roaming at the same rates.

I have two of these, one of which has never been topped up and still in service after nearly two years, perhaps because use of the free data qualifies as usage. So, if you only need to be able to receive the odd call, and use a bit of data occasionally, totally free..!
    Evolution, not revolution
  • Another advantage of the 3 Data Sim is that you only need to top up a minimum of 2 quid (not 5 or 10).

It's not a requirement - you can keep NO balance if you want, but if you did need it for an emergency call, then best to keep 2 quid on balance.

I think the data sims simply need to show some "data activity" every 6 months - even FREE data activity.
