    Hello
I know no likes doing it, but have you considered coasting more (in high gear), and braking less to save on petrol.
    Just a thought.
    Hope it helps

Bob unless you are happy to get heavily spammed it's really not a good idea to have your email address as your forum name. I'd suggest contacting the moderating team to see if they can change it.

You really cant generalise about cars like this. Sure, drive with a feather foot, anticipate well, brake less and keep useless extra weight out of the car (she can walk). You will have to drive in as high as appropriate for the conditions, without the engine labouring and not needing to constantly drop down gears to keep up with traffic or floor the throttle because you havent been concentrating. Experiment a bit and it will fill up a boring commute; but saying things like keep to a certain speed or engine rev just wont work. For example, even feather-footing my (auto) car for a week to let it "learn" the settings it still would never go above third gear - out of six- at 30mph.

Do you have it stuck in the "sports" setting ?

With a 2 litre diesel Mondeo manual estate, I can let it tick over in 5th (top) at 30 MPH as long as there are no hills or obstructions.
Though it is happier at 40 MPH (and I've got points to prove it :o).

How much are two cans of Red Bull? BP tends to be the more expensive petrol station, so the saving has to be worthwhile.

Why pay £2odd for Red Bull when the silver cans for 35p from your corner shop/newsagent are just as good!

So if you have a big empty tank you can fill it with expensive fuel but get a couple of free cans of a liquid worth about 60 p in aldi/lidl ?
Possible more sensible than putting in 3 litres just enough to get to a cheap supermarket.

Everything you did not want to know about high margin Red Bull

The French authorities got a bit excited about the dangers if dosing adolescent girls with "bull" extract (unlike the drug companies who experimented in "the swinging 60's" with testosterone.)
  • The best advice is even simplier, drive like a grandma at the start and end of a journey. IF you live at the bottom of a steep hill you are screwed but most people shouldnt be going beyond 3000 revs

If you do this even with a turbo then you will be fine. The reason being that a turbo is not active at all times, if the engine is otherwise able to provide enough power it will not be employed or under stress. Like reversing or very consistent 20mph or so driving there is no turbo boost in action, on a very fancy BMW it should probably have an indicator that would confirm this info in real time

So cooling down the turbo at the end of a journey is right but you are a muffin if you were accelerating hard right upto your drive way.
It wont be hot enough to do any damage if you spent 5 mins driving like miss daisy so idling is unneeded. Plus your neighbours walking their dogs will love you more :D

The biggest issue with a turbo is allowing it to spin without a feed of oil to the bearings. So, if you have been ragging it and immediately switch off the engine from high revs, the turbo will be spinning and no oil will be lubricating it. This is a sure fire way to wear out the turbo very quickly, and if you drive a TDI like this, could lead to a runaway - where the bearings fail, oil can freely flow from the bearing case and this feeds the engine. Turning off the ignition will have no effect, as the engine is now running on its own oil. Only way to stop it is select top gear and drop the clutch (you could fubar the clutch mind you) or to prevent air enetring the engine and thus suffocating the combustion.

Whatever, if you have a runaway, chances are you will need a new engine!
