The odd little bit of tax on fuel is going to be a drip in a bath tub compared to the general taxation increases than are going to have to come in the next few years to deal with the public debt.
There fundamentaly isn't enough money to make the kind of investment required to sort out transportation. Can you ever do it anyway since transportation use has a habit of expanding to fill whatever capacity you provide?
It doesn't help that taxation policies such as stamp duty discourage people from moving home and lead to more commuting miles when job locations change.0 -
I would hardly call 65% of the total cost an odd little bit.
As for public debt, a lot of it is labours fault in the first place. They can't expect the general public, a lot of whom are already stretching to the limits with what they can afford, to pay for it all. They need to stop pretending that we are a rich nation and throwing money away. There are big changes that need to happen, and a lot of them revolve around a government that are trying to do the best for it's people and not about how the country looks or what they can fleece off the tax payer.0 -

65% tax is huge when you look at it as a percentage, for the average motorist it is something like £600-£800 a year tax which is one of the smaller to medium sized tax bills most people pay in a year. An extra 1% tax on this is pretty insignificant next to the tax rises and spending cuts that will come. The general public and businesses will pay for it because there is no where else for it to come from. More than half the tax take is from individuals and not businesses.0 -
An extra 1% on to of something we're severely paying over the odds for is a lot in my eyes. The fact that other countries that are in similar if not worse positions than we are but are not paying as much for fuel says something, and that is that we are being ripped off! Like I said, the price that Poland pays for fuel includes road tax, which we pay between £100 and £940 per year on top of the price of fuel depending on what car we drive. Not to mention that road tax in an international market is a bad idea. When drivers from the UK go to Europe, they pay road tax as it's built into the fuel cost, however Europeans that come over here don't pay any road tax. I know haulliers are upset about this.
I agree, there should definately be cuts on spending. However I think a lot of my ideas for the spending cuts wouldn't go through because no politition would have the balls to do it, or they're not in their interests.
Polititions should only be allowed to claim for expenses directly related to their political duties.
Child allowance should be limited to 2 children. This should put a stop to council estate chavs who have lots of kids so that they don't have to work for a living, put a drain on our economy, yet moan about all the 'forigners' taking 'our' jobs. The jobs they're too lazy to do.
We should drop out of Europe. It costs us millions a year to be a part of, but does not benefit us at all.
We should get out of Iraq/Afganistan. We shouldn't have been in Iraq in the first place.
We need to stop acting like we're one of the big hitter countries and worry about our home situations rather than flaunting money that we don't have to make ourselves look better. The Olympics being one of them. Its costing the country billions, and I bet it won't recover the outgoings. Waste of money, just to make us look good.
Labour have screwed this country over financially, our country is going downhill everyday, and they still do nothing. There's too much talking, too much political correctness, too much bulls**t, and not enough action. We need someone like Thatcher back in power. Not everyone agreed with her, a lot of people hated her, but she had the balls to get things done and the country was actually in a good financial position at the end of her stint. None of the political leaders at the moment have the guts to get anything done, so we'll keep over spending, over taxing, suffering, and going downhill.0 -

If we take the view that motorists are being penalised unfairly in this situation, well I'd probably agree with that.Like I said, the price that Poland pays for fuel includes road tax, which we pay between £100 and £940 per year on top of the price of fuel depending on what car we drive. So why does the government still allow filling stations to be "tied" to a given oil company.
There is a stink of cartel over the whole business.0 -
Make your own. In the past ive made my own fuel out of used engine oil mixed in. Veg oil from the local pizza shop mixed in
And make your own "winter" diesel and run on it all year.
Mix kero in with pump diesel like they do to make winter diesel.
Couple of drops of new oil and there you have what the brands call winter diesel.
FYI
If its oily then there is a good it can be used as fuel0 -

Yes, great idea.
Then budget £1500 when you knacker your fuel pump.
Or burn out a set of injectors
And invalidate any warranty you have on the car.

Has anyone had experience of using electronic engine tuning add-ons. Seen adverts for in line units for diesel engine that 'promise' more fuel efficient and more power. Any comments appreciated before I lob out £1500

Re-map technically better option. For various reasons I have an add on tuning box. Long distance driving 10% better fuel economy, town and short distance driving about same to 5% worse. 20% more peak power on this one.0
