I have been onto virgin all evening. I have discovered on my account that the £15 a month deal is effective until 2037 but they say saying the plan is effective if I accept the £8 increase.

The plan I signed up to should be £26 but I got £10 a month off at £15 a month for 20gb and it says all in the same area that it’s effective until 2037. Surely they should keep it like that if it’s effective until that date.
    Mortgage free wannabe

    Actual mortgage stating amount £75,150

Overpayment paused to pay off cc

    Starting balance £66,565.45

    Current balance £58,108

    Cc around 8k.

  • In under three years with Virgin's plan changes my monthly cost went from £8 to £9, then to £12 and this year suggested to £15 - which would all be okay if I was actually anywhere near using my allowance but I'm not!
2500 minutes a month! I'd have to be talking on my phone for almost an hour and a half a day which in my case is impossible! The only difference in this increase would be in data & most of mine is used when at home, so I don't need it (hint: that's why you keep rolling over my data, Virgin Mobile.).

I've changed my plan back down to £6/month which suits me better, though I still won't use the minutes. This still suits my needs better than the alternatives for various reasons. If Virgin hadn't tried to put by plan cost up again I would probably have stayed, so they lost out in my case AND I will keep a closer eye on their changes in future too.

I would avoid BT. (particularly if you like to move your boradband around frequently to save money)

Try plusnet (uses EE network) 30 day contract, good value

MSE have finally read the press release and published this as a news story, so I expect this thread will be merged soon.

Thanks AndyPK Plusnet looks good and not locked in.. Will try Virgin once more as they are offering new customer, when purchasing a phone, a Freestyle Plan for £9 incl 6GB of data (3GB Life time double data) 1500 minutes and Unlimited texts - so really like for like - so not sure why we haven't been offered that.

Perhaps because, as you say, it's for new customers?
  • I called and got nowhere. I currently pay £4 a month and this is increasing to £13. After calling I was offered a £9 a month deal... how can they justify such an increase? And what’s to stop them doing it again? I need to look at alternatives.

Commercial companies don't really have to justify price increases, as you say yourself, there are alternatives, vote with your feet.

I rang last week and was offered £9 a Month for 1500 minutes, 4gb and unlimited text/virgin to virgin. I said I only wanted to pay until my contract ends in July. I was told that this wouldn't be possible as they didn't do 30 day rolling contracts, having stopped last Year. I was told that to end my contract early ie by 31st March, without charge according to the letter, I would have to pay off my handset contract ( £50). I said that I didn't feel this was fair as they were forcing me to pay off my handset in one payment instead of monthly or that I had to start a new contract, at the £9 offered to me. I said I would think about it.
I have just rang earlier today to be told a totally different story.
I was offered 1500 minutes, 6gb and unlimited texts for £7 but, even better, would be a rolling 30 day contract so I can finish it in July, when I plan to take all of my mobile phone contracts over to BT.
I kept checking that it was a 30 day contract and was told it definately is so I am happy with the outcome.
