Virgin Mobile price hike!!

  • So, I got one of these emails too...

Called them and quite simply they were useless - I was repeatedly told to ring back after the 30th of this month! It's February! Apparently their systems do not yet have the new prices. When I questioned the fact that there is only 28 days in February I was advised therefore to wait until after 30th March instead!

The "Lifetime 4 x Data" which according to my account is "Effective: 28th Jul 2017 to 31st Dec 2099" will no longer be on offer - so the word 'Lifetime' is meaningless and so is the effective end date.

I get them having to do 'normal' RPI increaees year on year, but this is ridiculous!
  • I have one of these messages as well, the trouble is i took out one of these contracts with the whole price in mind and after comparing it with the competition at the time (3 years contract). They are quite willing to let you cancel the allowance part of the contract without any penalties but you have to keep paying for the phone, the way i see it until the phone is paid off they are not likely to unlock the phone to other providers so basically we are stuck. In my case as well the terms actually stated lifetime 4 x data and the 2099 expiry. I believe they are allowed to change payments but i would expect it to be within reason and not underhandedly like this.
I have no issue them putting us on different tariffs but it needs to be within reason and certainly not a hike from £4 to £13.
So basically they can say what they want to get you on a contract and then when you are tied in with the handset they can change the contract? i can;'t see how this is legal?

I got this email too. I pay £15 a month for 20gb data which rollover so I usually have 40gb anyways as I have built it up and 40 is the limit, 5000 minutes that I hardly use and unlimited texts. They are wanting to increase the price by £8 to give me 40gb data straight off.

I only got this phone in December 2017 and I would need an iPhone as I maybe getting a cochlear implant which works with an iPhone.

I have the se and pretty much happy with it. I have recently changed the battery also .

I do like the look of the pro 20 phone that is out but need an iPhone.

Plus my contract is a rolling monthly contract and if I got the sim only deals that are online I am tied to it for 12 months.

I had the same email and my email says I can leave my contract penalty free but will still need to pay the phone bit of my contract. My bill bill is currently £4 a month due to go up to £13 and phone part is £16 a month

I rang them and got a totally disinterested woman on the end of the phone who said "I'll pass your comments to Virgin"... Oh joy!

  • I'm also suffering from this ridiculous decision by Virgin mobile. £4.13 is now £13. What really got to me is that there is currently an offer on their website for £12 which is far better than the one they offered me for £13. Salt in the wounds. I have been a loyal Virgin customer since I first got a mobile. You know what they say about loyalty....The lifetime 4x data is meaningless. I rung up and complained and got offered a £9 deal rather than the £13 deal. I am waiting for their customer service people to get back to me. I think this is a con. Put up my bills from £4 to £13 and then offer me £9 when I complain and expect me to be grateful - I think they call that 'sharking'. Shame on you Virgin!

Hopefully, I can just change provider - surely the phone attached to Virgin (still paying it off) will not be locked to virgin mobile?
  • I too have received this email and no where in my paperwork did it tell me that it was an introductory offer! Very disappointed with Virgin!
If all else fails I may see if I can get their sim only contract which they are offering 12GB data for £12!!!!!!!!!!!

they should allow you to move to an offer on their website. (12 month contract).

or a plusnet sim may work in a locked phone, these are on a 30 day contract, so worth a go

Not everyone wants to be tied to a 12 month contract

  • I have had the same email from Virgin Mobile raising the bill from £4.13 to £13. My husband has the same contract but hasn't received an email yet. So an extra £212.88 a year for less data!
We took a contract out for a daughter in November and really hoping hers isn't going to be affected.

They said we can cancel our 'plan' part of the deal by the 31st March and will give the pac and unlocking code for the mobile phones.Currently searching for a decent deal, BT (who also use EE) not looking too bad as we have their Broadband and get a small discount. Really disgusted with Virgin, can not believe they can do this!
