I have opened an ISA account for this tax year, but paid nothing in. I now want to open and use another account with a different provider. Any problems with this?

    Thanks,

    John

If you haven't subscribed any cash to the first account on or since 6th April 2009, as far as HMRC is concerned, you don't yet have a 2009/10 ISA - so no problem at all.

  • hi all
ive been away on holiday and have completely forgotten that my birmingham and midshires cash isa matures on 19 Nov, I've got a letter from them asking what I want to do with it.

i also applied to first direct, got the form and havent actually got round to sending the forms back.

should i just return the birmingham and midshires form and reinvest in their Direct ISA and only transfer a bit later after my first direct account is set up? as it stands I havent actually got a new ISA provider yet..im also not sure what will happen to my isa money if i dont reply to birmingham and midshires by 19 Nov..

It says in the T&Cs. Ring them today?

It will be either put into another fixed term, or put into an instant access ISA. Not sure which. Phone them now and find out.
  • Another newbie question. Please be gentle! ;)

I've had an ISA with Intelligent Finance for years now. I am looking at moving to the best rate. If I open a new one with First Direct for example, can I transfer all my money into this as well as still having the £3600 to invest for this tax year into the FD account (I haven't made any contributions to my ISA this tax year)?

Not sure if the transfer counts as part of the £3600 allowance or not.
  • A transfer isn't a subscription, so the £3,600 would be permitted on top of the transferred funds. Make sure you transfer the money via FD's transfer form, don't withdraw the cash from IF.
