Shame you can't open or operate it online without a mobile phone signal (Beehive has just confirmed that to me by chat).  Another one off the list for me!

Hmm I think that depends on definition of mobile phone signal. I use an iPad that doesn’t have cellular / sim to administer this account. I’ve just removed the sim from phone and connected phone via wifi and can access. It is of course app only, but if you mean a 3,4 or 5G signal is required that’s not my experience, as long as the device can run the app and has internet access it works for me.
Interesting.  The link took me to a page which gave me the option of downloading the app or "open an account online", and as I was on my laptop I went for that. I couldn't see anything to say it was app only. Got a code to verify my email, then it asked for my mobile to send a code to verify my mobile number.  That was the problem - without a mobile phone signal I can't get an SMS.  In the chat I asked if I went somewhere with a signal to open the account, could I then operate the account at home without a signal?  She said no, because you needed to receive an SMS to withdraw money and operate the account.

I've just downloaded the app and tried to register that way, but hit the same problem.  Were you able to register and open the account without receiving an SMS?

So I registered from home where I get an sms signal. If I didn’t then Wi-Fi would in my experience still be enough via Wi-Fi call which if phone/network support should allow you to receive sms over Wi-Fi. I’ve done this previously on EE and iPhone X, so it’s possible, could potentially depend on handset and network though.

I have 3 accounts and have just managed to withdraw £10 using sms over Wi-Fi. On the iPhone I put it into flight mode then enabled WiFi, not sure how relevant that is to you? Incidentally that’s my first withdrawal from them, 5 digit code arrived in a timely manner. Although processing won’t happen until the next working day.

Some mobile providers offer a widget for wifi calling and texting (at a price) and some don't (mine doesn't).  There are 40 or 50 of us in our not-spot and some of my neighbours pay for it - mostly people who travel daily outside the not spot and so use their mobiles for calling and texting a lot.  I don't and for me it's not worth the cost.  I have an app (Voxist) for getting voicemail to my mobile, but it does not work for texts.  Most banks now offer an alternative to SMS for OTPs (voice call to landline or push notification to an app) or give you a widget for 2FA.  Beehive seems to be one of the few that don't - others I know of are Principality, Oak North, Investec and Close Brothers.  Plenty of other banks and building societies available.

How are you guys unable to get a mobile signal at home? if you can’t with a particular network have you tried other networks.

In our case it's because we live out in the sticks. We get a very variable and very weak Vodaphone signal in one corner of one bedroom and a slightly more reliable O2 signal on one corner of the kitchen (at the opposite end of the house) and that's it. Both of those signals will only do voice and text - no "G" of any type. The other networks just don't reach here. A few years ago someone tried to put up a new mast closer to us and a local campaign squashed it because we're in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The mast would not have been visible from any property and, I think, they were even going to disguise it to look more like a tree.

Assuming you have internet access, have you tried using WiFi Calling?

I've sent SMS that way but I've never got it to work for receiving SMS.
I usually just put the phone in the corner of the kitchen a few minutes before I need to receive an SMS so it can, um, get comfortable. Voice calls are all on a conventional phone connected to an ATA adapter (=VoIP), which works fine.

Yes, there are a lot more not-spots about than people realise. Our wifi is good (from a wireless ISP), but all the effort seems to go into extending fibre broadband or 5G coverage, both of which would be nice to have but not really what we need - which is mobile voice and SMS coverage.

We're all hoping that something is done before they turn off our analogue landlines in 2025, leaving no comms at all after a power cut - well 1 hour after a power cut, which is all the battery backup that Ofcom thinks is needed!
