While you're down in that part of the world, could you tootle down the M4 to Cardiff and give Principality a kick?

I'm not keen on app only banking.  I do use banking apps routinely for daily management, but there are several reasons why I prefer to have the option of web based account management too.  A large one being that I have Reynauds and often have difficulty using touch screens and prefer when setting up a new payee or making transfers, where typing numbers accurately matters, to use a keyboard and mouse than rely on my tricky fingers.  Not to mention that some of the apps have really tiny numbers on some of these sorts of screens.  So for important stuff, I prefer my PC.
So glad it’s not just me! Eventhough I have a fairly large iPhone I really struggle with exactly those issues. I don’t mention it much as I get the raised eyebrows and old person looks!! I do worry about everything now going to Apps.  [Even the eye hospital I’m under sends everything out to smartphone only - it’s an eye hospital so it’s for people with vision issues and many are also elderly🙄😡]. I feel I need the option to use a larger screen and have online access so that does play a part in which accounts I choose.

The worry I have with the Tandem/Chip apps is that they seem to have no security other than the possession of the SIM of the mobile number associated with the account. So all this discussion about phone security is irrelevant if a thief can simply put the SIM in a new phone and get access to your accounts using freshly installed apps on that phone?

The app for my main bank account is locked to the phone & would require access to that phone (or a call to customer services) to move it. However Tandem & Chip don't seem to have this security (or am I wrong about this)?

Maybe they have added security around setting up a new linked account to transfer your money out to, but this isn't obvious with the ease with which I set up my linked account (only security was on the other end within the linked account app).
Lock the SIM with a PIN code.
Thanks, just set this up 👍
  • My wife tried to open a Tandem EA account yesterday at about 5pm and the ID checks are STILL pending. Anyone else having this problem? I assume it is because they have been deluged by applications as she has never had this problem with any other savings account application (usually instant).
I’ve had exactly the same experience with no contact from tandem at all.
I’m also in the same situation, applied about 5pm yesterday. No contact from Tandem.

    Ulster Bank now 4.90%  EA
    Requires £50,000 minimum balance. £1 - £49,999 is a pretty dire 2.10%.

Farage will be taking them to court.

I have a question about opening savings accounts and credit file/history. I'm aware that opening a current account is likely to lead to a hard search on your credit file. Is the same true when opening an easy access savings account? In particular, I'm thinking of opening the Tandem account, but also nervous since I'll need to apply for a mortgage fairly soon. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Applying for savings accounts won't result in a hard search.
