I got the same letter about the reduction in rates. There's nothing about it on their website now that still has the old rates writ large. I'd be very annoyed if i opened today only to know they've already planned a reduction.

I wonder if Nat West will follow suit?

Jimmy the Wig and initially LGG thanks, my Egg bonus rate has just finished and I was going to open an AA account. However, after checking here and finding that LGG had asked the exact question I was going to post and JtW had given such a helpful answer I'll go and have a look at what I can get from Egg, if I'm not going to take too much of a hit I may just move my money out and then back in to another Egg account as I have been very happy with them.

I just opened an Santander esaver online, do you receive a card with his savings account? I already have one for my standard Current Account?

    Thanks
Yes, I was just going to 'warn' about this account. It is not one where you can transfer in and out from your linked account. I know I should have read the details but I am used to changing instant access accounts as soon as the bonus runs out and just wasn't careful enough. When I phoned up and asked about transferring to and from a linked account I was on hold for 20 minutes and then I hung up. I was told I could just take £300 a day with the card they were sending and that was all. I suspect that this is the way this account works. Anyway, luckily I only sent a cheque for £1 and have now I've written and asked to close the account and have opened one up at Scotrtish Widows (joint account), AA (single name only allowed) and Saga (single name only allowed). I don't want to put our savings away for longer with all the talk of interest rates going up. Well who knows.

Somthing I find a bit ironic with the following e-saver accounts being offered at the moment

AA - account can be opened in single name only
Saga - account can be opened in single name only
Scottish Widows - can be opened in JOINT names!!

I'd almost finished completing the online application when realised I hadn't been asked for details of my bank a/c e.g. sort code, a/c no. etc. I want to transfer money by direct debit into the Santander a/c but seems that's not an option. Apart from the initial cheque to open the a/c, can anyone let me know how further deposits are made? Did I miss seeing the info?

  • Hello money saving chaps and chapettes, first time poster, long term puzzled head scratcher here.

I recently helped my dad get a credit card with Egg, as he already had a savings account with them. I figured it would be simple enough to arrange the credit card balance to be paid in full from the savings account automatically every month.

Unfortunately, Egg don't allow this - you can do it yourself, logging in and making one of transfer payments, but they said they don't allow direct debits to come out of Egg savings accoounts.

It looks like I'll need to find an alternative savings account for him - preferably one that is FSCS protected, has online access, allows direct debits from the account, and, after reading the "Top Savings Accounts" article, doesn't have withdrawal penalties! Egg are currently giving him 1.25% gross pa/AER, so ideally I'm hunting for something no worse that that. I'm looking into the Santander eSaver account at the mo, should that fit the bill?

I am not aware of any savings account that will let you set up a direct debit to a credit card.

Not marketed as a savings account, but the Lloyds Classic account with Vantage is a current account (complete with cheque book, debit card, direct debits etc.) which pays some interest on balances within certain ranges, maximum 4% on balances between £5K and £7K.

P.S. Depending on the amount he has to save you could also open a new Egg account at 2.5%.

Got a letter today from ING saying my old ING account is earning interest at 2.8% AER (2.76 gross pa) and is fixed for 12months. (moved my money away from ING a long time ago after their high then pathetically low interest rates)

Thought I'd mention this, as the best buy appears to be the AA which appears to be the same offer but variable where this is fixed.
