E.on smart meter

HI All, I`m looking for some advice please. I had a smart meter installed 6th Feb and my electricity usage has gone through the roof. I usually average 120Kw per month based in the previous bills over the previous 6 months. These include ACTUAL meter readings and not my readings. However in the past 9 days the meter says that I have used 178Kw. I have been taking readings each day to try and track the usage but I am at a loss as to what is happening. I have not used any different appliances or changed my pattern of usage. Today for example I went to work at 0515 with a meter reading at 124Kw used. All appliances turned off as normal but have returned from work at 1400 to find a meter reading of 168Kw!! No-one has been in the property and I live alone. I Phoned E.on and was kept on the phone for 45 minutes trying to explain the situation. In That time I turned of the main fuse box so no power coming into the property and the display unit was displaying that I was using 3.6Kw jumping to 9Kw back to 4.7 to 5.7kw , I was explaining this to the chap on the phone but getting nowhere. I don`t understand how my meter is charging me for electricity that is not being used in the property? There`s no power into the property! In the 45mins on the phone the meter had advanced 6Kw.
I might add that this same problem occurred 2 days after the meter installation and I racked up 99 units in a day! Could it be that the meter is faulty? the installation faulty?
E.on have advised that I have to pay £65 up front to have the meter tested but I want it removed. I wasn`t aware that I could have refused the smart meter... all the emails and text messages I got from E.on kept saying WE NEED TO CHANGE your meter etc.
What I do know is that this is really stressing me out ( I have a heart condition and diabetes ) and I`m getting nowhere with E,ons customer service line. They put the phone down on me after the 45 minutes!
Any advice is most welcomed
Thank you
Mark

Are you reading this from the Smart meter itself or from the IHD ? What is the reading on the meter itself now ?

At installation it would have been 0000.0 Is the meter one where there is a small keypad where you need to press 9 to get the reading. Don't forget you need to ignore the numbers after the decimal point.

Have you electric heating / water heating ?

    120kwh is well below average.

  • Thanks for the reply Robin9.
the figures are from the main meter and tally up with the IHD. The meter is now up to 189Kw, the IHD shows the following info :-
    used today = 64.83Kw
used this week = 68.04 Kw ( have been away and only left the fridge freezer switched on )
    used this month = 189Kw. ... since 06/02

It is a one bed flat and the only appliance constantly switched on is the fridge freezer. my other appliances including tv , sky etc are used maybe 30hrs a week due to my work patterns hence the low usage.
So as you can see I have apparently used 11Kw in the 2hrs since my first post but the only appliance used in that time is the fridge.

PS Are you 100% certain that the meter is yours and not an adjacent flat ?

  • Sorry I forgot that bit
I have electric radiators but have never used them because I have a calor gas fire .
I have a water boiler that I use as and when needed but not been used this week due to working away. I switch this off at the mains when not needed. At the moment I am using my lap top , fridge freezer and sky with router.. the IHD is saying I`m using 8.7Kw per hour dropping to 4.7Kw and then back to 5.78Kw so I`m getting no constant figure.
  • Mine is the only smart meter in the meter cupboard so yes it`s mine but I wish it wasn`t .
My smart meter has no keypad , only 2 buttons and when I see the reading there is no decimal point .
  • I have just been checking through my notes an readings for the last week. I realised it was last Friday that I had the previous massive electricity usage of over 80Kw in the day. Last Saturday was over 20Kw but I was working away and not in the flat on either day. Sunday when I was back there was minimal usage. Is it coincidence that this has happened on consecutive Fridays??
I`m racking my brains for an explanation, my meter is now at 206Kw but I am only using TV laptop SKY box and router and the fridge freezer.
Hmmm just noticed that todays apparent electricity use is over 80Kw which is very similar to last week?
    Any thoughts anyone???

I'm surprised there is no decimal point.

What make/model number meter is it ? One of our meter readers will advise.

Is this a prepayment or credit meter ?

  • I pay a fixed amount each month by direct debit and am billed quarterly as far as I`m aware. I have been doing that since the start of my 12 month fixed term contract beginning last July.
