You could do with reading what was wrote. Will there be ill effects? Nope.

Yes, I read that. Having to retard the ignition to deal with the lower quality fuel (remember, we're talking about 95RON vs 97/98RON, not any additives) IS an ill effect in my book. Buying a (hypothetical) 250 BHP car, and getting 240BHP out of it, is an ill effect, caused by penny pinching. The better fuel may get better economy too, depending on driving style. If you mean ill effects by the car breaking down, I agree. But the user really does need to read the manual. Mine says not to rev above 4,000 RPM for example, or 'ill effects' CAN happen.

Retard the ignition? Not sure what that means and therefore what ill effect is suffered is beyond me. Further to that a10 horse power drop is not what I consider an ill effect for someone using a vehicle normally and within the law. Finally the correction of this and I suspect your first point is easily achieved by replacing the normal with super fuel making this choice a compromise at worst.

Well then stop giving out advice and arguing with people who do.

What's the law on horsepower? Should fast cars be banned? Did you miss the efficiency argument?

No, not a comprimise at worst, engine damage at worst. It depends on the car. Anyway, you're saying 'no ill effects' and I'm saying you will lose BHP and MPG. I'm not saying the engine will fall out of the car. On plenty of cars (especially Japanese) the user manual says there COULD be ill effects (my car, for one). A blanket 'no ill effects' isn't good advice.

If you get inferior mpg then the whole issue of moving to regular 95 is self defeating.

I understand engines, I don't understand your post. So im giving out advice which is as valid as yours. With regard to the law, using all available horses in a s3 is unlikely to keep you within the law. Depends on the car, nope. The car is specific. It's a s3. Hence my post stating "Its only a s3". So in effect you are in agreement with my earlier statement. Some vejocles will be affected, im thinking top end motors. Anyway I'd be very surprised if it damaged an engine. I'd be interested in how this would happen. I can see ecu issues and maybe some sort of MAF problems and the mixture being affected but physical damage? How? Fuel exploding is fuel exploding.

Do you understand yet, what retarding the ignition means? It's fundamental to the difference between unleaded and super unleaded, which is the subject of the thread.

What law would you break? Any car on the road can break the speed limit on either petrol.

Indeed, so your advice was specific to the S3, good. AFAIK, it can deal just fine with normal unleaded. But it will not run as well as it can, reducing responsiveness, performance and MPG. All for 2p per litre. You say no ill effects, I agree it will be OK, no damage will occur, but I think it's a false economy. We are in agreement mostly here.

I'll take that as a compliment, on behalf of my 14 year old Nissan!

See, you say you understand engines, you're arguing with people on this very subject, then you say 'fuel exploding is fuel exploding'. Test - what's the difference between 95RON and 97/98RON? I know the answer, but it looks like you very much do not.

    Do you have a point?

Yes - don't give out advice about not using super unleaeded, if you don't understand how it works. Did you get my point?

Luckily not, as your point is egotistical and incorrect.

Egotistical and incorrect eh? Want to explain ingition retardation to us? Share your knowledge on the internal workings of an Audi A3 engine? Just argue with random people?!!
