As a proud Welshman I would like to point out we have many good tradesmen, most of them from the Eastern most parts of Europe who work harder than any Brit. Best do it soon though before they are all kicked outAn answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......0

Does beg the question as to why the OP is considering Wales at all considering their apparently very low opinion of the place. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I am considering moving from my Home Area (definitely not what it Used To Be before I moved in!!!), to a rural location like Wales. I am hoping there is someone on the forum with direct experience of this, someone approaching retirement age... I do need to be careful with my money!
As a sensible answer ...
Consider your location carefully in relation to hospitals. Outside the Cardiff-Swansea area you may have to go a long way for some specialist treatments, which can turn an outpatient appointment into a stay the day before and after whilst waiting for patient transport.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
OP,
Is this thread a wind-up? Why an earth would you want to move to somewhere, where you have such a low opinion of the place/people?In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
Decent tradesmen ARE a problem, very, very few here.
I've seen some appalling bodge jobs from supposed proper tradesmen.0 -
We tried to move to Wales, but alas, for those with persistent coughs or winter colds, the climate over there is not ideal and definitely far less clement than in our balmy home area.
Also, when suffering these conditions, it's torment to be in a place where the notorious double L is carelessly strewn around in place names. We found it impossible to ask for directions, without breaking into a coughing fit reminiscent of poor old Bob Fleming on the Fast Show.
Before you laugh, ask yourself why Tony Christie never recorded "Is This the Way to Llanfairfechan?"
Exactly! Fechan ridiculous language and a dour climate.
Nice scenery, though, and at least they have an identifiable culture.....;)0 -
Ah, so many fond memories, so many strange tales but, like memories, I suspect this thread will fade and vanish.....
Apologies to those who missed the allusion. I'm now off to peruse some more gems... pressure washing the outside of my house... that teeny, tiny issue.. or all I need know about knotweed! So many delights to select!:D:D

I'm about to retire (early) and decamp from the south east but we're going to Devon (specifically, Exeter).
For a myriad of reasons the main one being freeing some equity, as my husband and I have a serious travel habit and we reckon we've got 15 good years before long haul travel starts to become onerous.
We chose Exeter in part because of the facilities there - huge A&E, cathedral city, university, close to the coast, great transport links, Premiership Rugby team...
I have a degenerative kidney problem so being able to get easily to my GP and the hospital is a must as is having a good bus and train service although I can drive at the moment, my husband isn't a driver.
I would dearly love to live somewhere where I couldn't see my neighbours but as you grow older that isn't always practical.
