Hello Forumites! In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non-MoneySaving matters are not permitted per the Forum rules. While we understand that mentioning house prices may sometimes be relevant to a user's specific MoneySaving situation, we ask that you please avoid veering into broad, general debates about the market, the economy and politics, as these can unfortunately lead to abusive or hateful behaviour. Moving to Wales

I am considering moving from my Home Area (definitely not what it Used To Be before I moved in!!!), to a rural location like Wales. I am hoping there is someone on the forum with direct experience of this, someone approaching retirement age... I do need to be careful with my money!

I do worry that I might move, only to find I have chosen the wrong area, or move to an area not full of Normal People like myself, maybe end up with a Neighbour From Hell, and I could benefit from views - any views really - of those that have done this before, that is.

I understand Japanese Knotweed is rife Over There, and many of the tradesmen leave much to be desired, and it's difficult to get a Proper Job Finished. There may even be areas where welsh is popular, or land boundaries not definitively defined, and I wouldn't want any of that, thank you very much to!

I would go and spend some time over there, rent for a while, but time is, sadly, a bit short.

Are there any particularly nice locations that I ought to look to?

Do any of the Forum regulars have such experiences or reminiscences to share, or maybe remember others with such experiences they'd like to mention?

Oh, I'll probably be out tomorrow, so will only see the overnight responses, I suspect!

Have you perhaps even considered that in some people's eyes you might be seen as
    not Normal People
    or
    a Neighbour From Hell
    particularly as an incomer?

    Just asking, not judging.

I only ask as I myself moved, coming up to retirement age, to another country within UK.

NB You might prefer that country, where there was (genuinely...) a Doctor by the name of Donald Duck...

NNB I've never considered myself normal: A view shared by many!

I'm sure I remember that there was a woman on here who fit those parameters but she seems to have disappeared...along with anyone who mentioned her. :D

(Perhaps this thread will become the Sunil Dhown saga, in its second manifestation.)

Moneyistooshorttomention....search for old posts regarding their move.

To be honest, you might as well stay where you are. Why the desire to move to Wakes when you think it's full of shoddy workmen speaking welsh and being bad neighbours? You don't particularly sound like you'd fit in with that attitude. ANd you do realise that it's YOU who has to fit in, not them to you?

BTW, I can attest that there are plenty of shoddy workmen speaking english and being bad neighbours in england too....?

  • As long as you don't go too far west you can live in Wales but hardly ever be troubled by anyone speaking Welsh. If you buy a house in an elevated position you will even be able to see England over the Bristol Channel and pick up English TV and Radio with news of Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire instead of Rhondda Cynon Taff, Ceredigion and Gwynedd.

    Who?

No idea who that is. In fact, if you copy and paste that exactly, no user of that name is known....

Now, I must go and tend to my Daily Deeds. Something just went "whoosh" up above as I read Taff's post, and I have no idea what it was. There's a little man doing the Loft Insulation at the moment (very, very badly, as it happens), and I think the noise is him peeling the foil off!

Now that is a Sensible And Useful Reply!.... Thank you!
