We don't get 6x25g packs of Deluxe crisps in England :(. I end up buying the equivalent at Aldi in cheese and onion, which are lovely but I still prefer Lidl's S&V.

Is this a new variation of the Oatie, or a different biscuit?

New, I think (the packaging has left the premises) in their 'Specially Selected' range and rather good - you can actually taste the apricot.

I think that Aldi’s The Foodie Market peanut butter (the one made with 100% peanuts) is made by Meridian Foods who sell peanut butter under their own name. As the date, batch code etc on the lid are in the same layout and font. Got a jar of both.
  • First time on here so hopefully I'm posting a new thread properly! I shop at Lidl and love their GI bread and rolls, add butter and some cheese, delicious 😋😋😋. As I shop monthly I freeze everything I can and the rolls especially freeze beautifully. I double wrap them in freezer bags and just let them defrost overnight when I want them. You can damp them and then put them in a hot oven for 5mins to make them like just baked. The bread tends to lose some crust when it defrosts but is just as delicious. The bread is about £1.29 and the rolls I think are 45p each.

Thanks for the freezing tip. I freeze a lot of stuff but haven't thought to do it with Lidl's fresh rolls. I agree, their low GI bread is good. I particularly like their sunflower seed boule. I think it's similar to sourdough but without the classic sour flavour.

I'm also thinking that crisping rolls in the oven would probably work just as well straight from frozen.

  • I have been buying "soft wholemeal" loaves, from either Aldi or Lidl, for years (ever since the ones I used to get from Tesco more than doubled in price, and Netto closed), and usually they are almost identical - but late last year, Aldi changed from normal "medium sliced" to what I would say were definitely "thick sliced" 'doorstops' - approx 0.5"/13mm thick! It is still 800g, but has fewer slices, so it's a sly way to make us pay more! I switched to the Lidl equivalent, but they have recently increased the size of each slice, so there are fewer slices in that, too! I remember Aldi had done this before, but reverted to a less-thick slice (but possibly not as before). I have yet to find an equivalent anywhere else for under 50p, never mind 40p, so I have started cutting the Lidl slices down and using the cut-off parts, to make sandwiches with one (cut-down) slice and two cut-off parts on top. 20 slices rather than 22 is like an 8% 'hike', and Aldi have now increased the price, too; 36p to 40p is another 10%! Having to pay 55p would be 52% more! (and we are still told inflation is around 3%!)
I hope they get plenty of feedback, but their customer services just said they would 'pass on' my comments, and Consumer Advice told me they're not aware of any standards regarding what "medium sliced" means!

Wow, that's quite an analysis! I sometimes get lucky with a 30% sticker off the seeded loaf which makes it 52p I think. How does this affect your calculation?

I can recommend Lidl Sondey cookies in dark chocolate and coconut, I think I prefer this variety to the others in the range. So delish I've wolfed down two with my afternoon latte :)

That's quite a diatribe. Unfortunately it's not confined to Aldi or Lidl. I had a very similar experience in Sainsbury's. The crusts, particularly, are so thick that they won't fit in my toaster (which incidentally is a posh Dualit one so should fit anything):D . You aren't losing out as bread is sold by weight but I don't want to eat larger portions of bread or resort to tricks with a carving knife.:D

I like thick bread for toasting, but I agree it doesn't work out so well for a sandwich, and I don't want to eat extra bread either. Rather than buying two different loaves, for myself I have taken to making fewer sandwiches and increasing the amount of filling to keep the proportions roughly the same. The results aren't always tidy to eat, but it sort of works. :)

I have a Foreman grill, so practically any thickness or size of bread is not an issue. I used to have problems in the past with a pop up toaster, but the Foreman grill can handle anything.

Just in response to the above loaf conversation (not trying to divert the thread topic!)T£sco's are doing a wholemeal loaf for 40p whose slices aren't that thick. It's under a bargain band name - can't remember what offhand. Interestingly, it was 36p at the beginning of January.

Was in Aldi earlier and they have reduced their value baked beans from 30p to 22p. Its advertised as a red label special, but T£scos are doing their value beans at 22p standard so I guess it's in response to that.
