Good and Bad Buying at Lidl and Aldi (***Please don't expire***)

Not just Aldi.
Tesco & Morrisons too.
One report of someone buying a turkey (presumably fresh) from Aldi on 19/12, putting it in the fridge and it was 'off' when they came to cook it on Christmas Eve.
Regardless of what the instructions say, if I was buying a fresh turkey I'd want to be picking it up a lot closer to Christmas than that.
I wonder how many of those 'off' turkeys have been kept in optimum conditions from the date of purchase.
I agree. The optimistic use by dates on poultry worry me a lot. If I intend to use a bird more than 48 hours after purchase I freeze it. I see chickens in Aldi offered with use by dates of seven or eight days.0 -

Mine from Morrisons on Christmas Eve is in the oven now. It was reduced to half price, and when I had to nip to Asda for cooking foil, they were giving away sprouts, carrots and parsnips, so a very MSE Boxing Day meal. :TYou're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
I bought my Turkey crown from Aldi on 21st, use by date 26th. I cooked mine on Christmas eve and it was still smelling good. My sister bought a Turkey from Asda on the same day and had to return it on Christmas eve as it was off. I once bought a beef joint from Tesco for boxing day that went off. Did have a chicken once from Aldi outside of Christmas that was off a day before its use by, otherwise I've never had an issue with Aldi.
I don't think meat going off is exclusive to Aldi but there is still a level of snobbery around it so they gets more bad press.
Good buys I bought recently are:
Veuve champagne @ £12.49. Christmas eve treat, as good as an expensive one.
Oliver Cromwell Gun @ £9.99 bottle. A really good gin.
I enjoyed their Christmas Yorkshire puddings filled with stuffing and pigs in blankets.
Their version of Pringles are pretty good.
They do Scottish made tins of luxury soup, very nice
Belgium buns
Mini flat breads
Mini nan breads from the bread section
I bought a double wrapping paper pack with gift tags for £3.99, thought it was pricey but the quality of the paper was out of this world
What I didn't like so much...
I bought their luxury Christmas sticky toffee pudding, quite pricey at £5.99. Looked great but there wasn't enough toffee sauce so it was more like sponge.
Their nuts are a little dry, if that makes sense0 -

Exactly my point.
You bought it and are cooking it within a 2 day timespan.
Different to 5 days.0 -
How many people bought those turkeys and just bunged them in the fridge still wrapped in the plastic?0

I do wish the staff at my Lidl would pay attention when reducing the price of items close to the sell by dates.
Saw an item today originally priced at £1.19, it was reduced by 30% to 83p with 2 days left but then increased to 90p on the last day.
I pointed it out to the manager and all he said was that he did not have time to look at it just now.0 -
I had the Aldi Vegetarian Spinach & Cheese Lattices for Christmas Lunch - I was very impressed. An excellent Veggie main course and really good VFM, too (2 for £1.49).
Unfortunately, the Aldi Cocktail Sausage rolls are not quite the guilty pleasure they used to be. I think they have probably reduced the fat content and they are now a little dry (still crisp, though).0 -
Christmas clearance at Lidl:
- Marzipan log 64p
- De luxe Festive Flavours Ice Cream £1.24
Various other half price clearance items, but not everything.0 -
Aldi Christmas goodies (mince pies, Christmas cakes etc) reduced now. I was hoping to get lucky with cheese but it wasn't to be.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Newton Aycliffe Aldi yesterday had increased the veg offers to 39p, despite still having a few lower price posters dotted around! The MrT extra a few yards away was still selling their veg offers at 19p...0
