Looking to change - can I find a provider that genuinely provides unlimited texts

I’m trying to help my Dad find a mobile provider that genuinely provides unlimited texts.

He is currently with Vodaphone on a pay as you go £15 a month bundle with supposedly unlimited texts along with some data and minutes.

He sends a lot of texts and is constantly finding he is getting charged for texts and has to get the texts reset and his money back which is now getting quite tiresome when you are having to do this once or twice a month. His largest group text is probably to 20+ people as they are all involved in a fantasy football game and likes to remind them of deadlines and best player of the week etc. He can easily send more than 100 texts in a day as quite a lot of his texts are sent to multiple recipients.

He is quite happy with pay as you go and doesn’t want a contract.

So, is there a provider that would provide a unlimited texts bundle of around 5000 texts a month on pay as you go for less than £15 a month along with some data and minutes?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Giffgaff give unlimited texts, 2GB data and 250minutes for £7.50/month. I've been with them for years now, no problems at all.

I hope his phone is set not to use MMS for Group Texts as it is the default on lots of phones. Which might explain why he is being charged for texts sent. MMS can be chargeable even with unlimited texts.

Most networks of a fair use policy even on 'unlimited' of around 5000 texts a month, does he get close to that?

Emoji can also convert a standard text into a MMS if the recipient is using a older device

No, definitely not being charged for the group texts so they must be going as SMS. The problem is that he has to get the ‘unlimited’ texts reset when he starts being charged. Sometimes he only realises he has been charged for the SMS when his money runs out.

I was looking at giffgaff and I thought that the £10/month bundle might suit.

I would say that he averages 3000 to 3500 texts a month. Vodafone seem to have a limit on their ‘unlimited’ texts of 1000 and then you start getting charged until you get it reset. Vodafone seem to operate a weekly limit.

He'd be far better off using WhatsApp or Skype or pretty much anything else over SMS for the group texts.

How do you use it to send texts to phones that don’t/can’t have WhatsApp or Skype installed?

The continual “use WhatsApp” as a solution when people are asking for advice about sms messaging or making phone calls is a little silly, you can only use WhatsApp to other people with smartphones who have WhatsApp installed (and not everyone has a smartphone or has WhatsApp installed).

"continual" - I've only seen the suggestion once, and I agreed with it.

Sure, whatsapp only works if you have a smart phone.

But SMS only works if you have a mobile phone.

Move with the times, and use appropriate technology for the task in hand.

The cost of a new smartphone, spread over two years, can be as low as £5 a month. And my monthly sim only contact is £7.50 a month.
