    i tried the cake in a 7inch wide and 3 inch deep tin, you need to start testing for readiness after 2 hours, mine is a bit more brown than should be as i was watching paul ogrady and left it in a bit too long but still tastes good, i didnt have walnuts or orange rind so left them out

    I cover my fruit cakes and any long cook cake with foil once the top looks cooked. It stops the top from burning. :)

    Wouldn't of helped if you were watching the television and not the cake though. :p

    I have just reserved this at my library so shall await with abated breath for them to get it in. I have seen it for £11.00, and have hinted to OH that I would love it for Christmas. I love anything done by Hugh, and the fact this is done by his mother I can't wait to read it.

    Twink!!! now you tell me to cover the top of the cake!!:rolleyes: actually mine doesnt look too dissimilar, I have taken a picture and will try and post it. No its not a furnace i have, just an fan-assisted oven! I left out the cherries as DH doesnt like them.

    The sides are abit dark?

    looks fine to me shez:D mum gave me a half of the cake this morning, very tempted now to go eat some:rotfl:

    mines a fanoven too and can be very tempermental, i hate making cakes in it!

    Ooh just noticed shez, thats quite a big wedge gone from the cake already, tut tut:naughty:

    looks good in the picture, its just the sides are abit hard :confused: Maybe I should line the tin next time?

    Of course you have to cut a big wedge just to check that its cooked properly in the center dont you??!:p :whistle:
