If there isn't a hard-border what would stop Eastern European immigrants entering UK via Ireland??

This highlights a significant flaw in representational democracy system - the MPs don't really represent people.

Do you really want them to? If put to a referendum, the average voter would want free beer & public hangings. I don't want important decisions on the future of my country being made by the average man on the street.

The problem is, every vote considers himself/herself above average :D

Some MPs are way below what I call average intelligence.

This thought has caused rise of populism.

Switzerland does have direct democracy which seems to work fine.

Surely nonsense. I would bet every MP is well above average intelligence.

Easy to criticise MPs (and I frequently do) but you have to work hard to get there. You have to have something about you.

OK, I was wrong. Diane Abot is more intelligent than you :D

She probably is, no shame in that.

Probably more intelligent than you as well.

But my point is she is of well above average intelligence. If you seriously think she isn't, then you don't know many average people!

Forgetting key figures and fluffing her lines when under pressure makes her rubbish at her job, but it doesn't make her of average intelligence.

As George Carlin used to say "Think about how stupid the average person is. Then realise that half of them are stupider than that"

Mind you, he also said "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers"

She's probably a very good constituency MP. But not front bench material.

There is also the Dunning-Kruger effect where stupid people are ultra-confident in their beliefs, whereas intelligent people are full of doubt.

Intelligence doesn't make up for a lack of common sense though.
