Calcotti what do you mean by a break between esa and universal credit?

Those aren’t my words, they are the words on the Citizens Advice website.

What it means is that to get the LCWRA element applied you have to go straight from ESA to UC. If you are on ESA and apply for UC that is what happens.

For someone getting ESA who comes off ESA and then claims UC at a later date they are starting with a new claim. This is what the break refers to.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • So really if I claim housing benefit on universal credit my esa will be stopped I will have to apply for universal credit and I should be entitled to lcwra from the start of my claim as I’m on support group and my payments won’t change just instead of fortnight payments it will be monthly and if they send me for an assessment that’s the norm but I can’t get put bk onto £57 a week for the 13 weeks as I was already on esa and went through that process at the start

You are misunderstanding the process (or possibly it’s just the way you’ve wording it). You cannot claim Housing Benefit because no new claims are accepted (there are exceptions but you do not fit these). Therefore if you want help with rent you have to claim UC. This automatically ends your ESA claim. Your UC claim should include LCWRA from the start.

  • Lol yes that’s what I mean so I claim uc to get help for rent so I get took off esa but I get it from the start of uc as I’m already on esa so it’s just a transfer but I will just have to wait a month or 2 and in between I can get an advance payment to help me out till I get my payment sorted think I get it now ha

Don't forget that any advance payment you receive will need to be repaid from your monthly benefit.
  • Yeah so be like £15 a week took off my monthly payment my standard and the lcwra element added together to get £580 and the £60 a month deduction for advance payment think that’s right isn’t it

Not sure of the details re repayments of an advanced payment but just to concur with Calcotti with regard the straightforwardness of transferring from ESA support group to Universal Credit. I did it last March, also to gain support with rent. The Support group info was transferred to the UC system very quickly.

Incidentally there was an error in my first payment, something had gone wrong with the housing support tick boxes in the system, but a quick message via the online system resulted in this actually being paid (I.e the mistake rectified) before the rest of the UC that month.
