So what? I expect that it wouldn't be too difficult to find several examples of 17 year olds causing a crash.

You may be correct (in a few cases) but I do not agree with your sentiments.
I am 73, been driving for around 56 years, have driven more vehicle types than most people. I keep a close eye on my driving and the moment I consider that I no longer have what it takes to be a competent driver, is the moment I give up my car. The fact is that most 97 year olds will have long ago reached this point: if this incident had involved an 'ordinary' 97 year old citizen and driver, he would have been subject to an inquiry as to his fitness to drive. Does anyone think that will happen in this case? No, didn't think so.

Just as a matter of interest, how old are you? Still driving?
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I've read the article, I can't see anywhere where it says Prince Phillip caused the crash?

Any other 97yo would be being sat down by the police, and the conversation would start with "We think now would be a very good time to consider handing your licence in, and if you agree then no further action will be taken over this incident, SIR..."

But just think about what must have gone through the heads of the people in the other car, when they realised who they'd hit...

I don't think he should tell his insurer. It would only lead to increased premiums for the next five years. I'm sure he can afford to reach a cash settlement with the third party. Probably just a case of pulling out a dent and some t-cut. £150, perhaps? If they want any more than that they're pulling a fast one.

How about “97-year-old immigrant causes crash, after changing name to disguise alien origins and living off the state for 70 years.”? The
    Mail?

You forgot to add the bit about the value of the third party's house and the effects of the crash on local property prices.

He was turning out of a side road on to the main A road.

He got T boned on the left of the vehicle by the look of the damage and ended up lying on its right side
