The unions have existed for different times and have very different terms but the bulk of the arguments are the same - we're stronger on the world stage in a bigger unit, that going it alone is expensive, that we trade with the UK and so on.

Respectfully, you’re wrong or perhaps more fairly, underestimating the difference in scale of the U.K. extracting itself from the EU and Scotland extracting itself from the U.K.
From my recollection, you’re a relatively recent arrival to Scotland from mainland Europe, I think you’re again underestimating the still quite strong bonds that exist between the peoples of these islands.

It will be beautiful to watch the brexiteer Tories trying to justify why Scotland should stay in the UK but the UK shouldn't stay in the EU. There will be a serious hypocrisy overload.

It is almost as beautiful as watching the SNP trying to justify their desire for independence by leaving one union and then immediately begging to join another.

Methinks that the latter union won’t be sending over the massive piles of cash that the former one does though.

Following Mr McDonnell’s delightful intervention yesterday, just thought it was reminding all you angry Lib Dem’s about what it is you are actually going to end up with.

Next time a labour remain supporter tells us that the future of the union is in doubt we can just point them in the direction of their shadow chancellor.

I see nothing wrong with what John MacDonnell said. I think he said something that any reasonable person would.

I like the UK with Scotland as part of it. However, if Scotland (as expressed by it’s democratic representatives) want an independence referendum, it’s up to them, not me nor anyone outside of Scotland.

The right to self determination is vital, and a London based party denying it stinks!

I've been in Scotland for over 3 decades. I think I've got a fair idea of the local mood.

It's like trying to leave a union where we're regarded as a 2nd class region of England and have no real say, and moving into a union where we'll be comparative equals and have a say. Within the EU we'll get more control over our own laws as Westminster won't be holding onto them.

The little Englanders have the same arrogant attitude towards Ireland.

Just because some Nats say that England treats Scotland like a 2nd class region doesn’t make it true. Scotland will never vote to leave the UK because Scots have far too much sense to do that. The Nats bang on about Independence but they would absolutely brick themselves if it ever came about.

Your whole post is simply risible.

Nah, they'll sit back, watch and see how a Brexit pans out first. If it turns out to be quite benign they'll be happy to stay. If it doesn't then an opportunist SNP will raise the prospect of independence more seriously. Nice when you can back either horse as suits.

Not sure why you think this is a big issue.
If Scotland want to leave then they should be able to.
Choosing is not the same as being out at risk.

I wonder how long the negotiations will take putting together the “leaving deal” and when finalised will it get through Parliament?
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
