Yeah, Asia has better trade links to the EU; Singapore (where Dyson is moving to) already has a FTA in place with the EU.
    ............
That's an interesting spin on it. It's good that we'll lose the jobs because the thing they are producing is pretty marginal, and we'll still have jobs producing the other stuff? Why couldn't we do both?

We've lost this one because they've decided that for the smaller runs it's better to produce them in Japan and ship them tariff free to the EU, rather than risk making them here and shipping them on WTO rates to the EU.

We get to enjoy that EU-Japan FTA for 59 days before we leave it. Great, huh?
The EU currently imposes a 10% tariff on Japanese cars. Under the agreement, it will lower this to zero over eight years.

The Singapore FTA is awaiting final ratification:

European Parliament plenary vote is foreseen for February 2019.

So we're not going to be missing much on Brexit day. But we should look sharp for sure, seeing how May has squandered the last 2 years with backsliding and a BINO.

Dyson has clearly identified his future growth marketplace as Asia. That's his decision and his judgement. The UK excels at design and R&D so it's nice we are getting a suitable slice of that.

As a manufacturer we are more marginal. The fact that Nissan is keeping the manufacture of better selling models here while diverting the model with the worst prospects to Japan could be seen as a good thing for the long term future. So far, no real Brexit effects, they will depend on actual deals done post-Brexit.

I thought free from the shackles of the EU nimble Britain would run circles around those lead footed Europeans and gobble up the Asian markets like Road Runner eating tasty seeds.

That's what the Brexiteers like Sir James said.

But what he actually meant was, he would rather turn his company into an Asian company to sell to Asia, than attempt to do so from Britain.

Oh, and by the way, if you're stuck in Britain you can't sell to the EU either.

    That's another Brexiteer win then.

What they're actually doing is moving it alongside production of the petrol model in Japan; the petrol version was always going to be built there. All they've done is move the diesel version to Japan for better economy of scale. If this were Brexit related, there are lots of places in the EU that the diesel model could have been manufactured instead.

Why build any plant in Europe? There's a trade agreement now between Japan and the EU. Only takes 6 weeks to ship a vehicle by sea to Europe. Concentrating production in one place makes perfect sense.

Rather like BMW building X5's in the USA. That's the primary market. Export from there back into Europe.

    Oh, didn't you know?

EU remainiacs invented JIT, and this means you can walk in and buy your SUV over the counter.
(they will still be shoving the wheels on as you carry it out the door, mind!)

It’s a measure of the sort of arguments that we get from leavers these days that I genuinely cannot tell if this was a serious post or not..

Anyway, for the record, JIT (or TPS - Toyota Production System) was developed by Toyota in Japan in the early 1970s - which was remarkably percipient of them at that time if they were EU remainers.

JIT manufacturing is Japanese in origin.

Car plants in the UK have parts coming in within 45 minutes of going on the vehicle. It's a very slick process that saves a fortune in warehouse management.

Presumably you know JIT is a Japanese invention?

Do you mean that you actually believe this garbage? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

This being the same Queen who as a child remained in London whilst the Germans were bombing it.

Its amazing that we criticise TF2 for doing what other media do by not reporting the full story. That is, this plan is if the public in London riot in the streets when they see what they have been missold. I am sure that were this to happen May would be in the car in front.

Last May it took my local Mazda 17 days to get a mudflap pack from Belgium for my new car. JIT is a myth. Still requires the actual parts to be held in stock. ;)
