So instead we should let the water companies take our hard earned money and give it to investors?
National Lottery is owned by a Canadian Pension Fund as an example. In the UK we are very short termist as investors. Jam today rather than jam tomorrow. Until the mindset changes. The UK has no option but to sell assets to fund it's national income deficit.
Upsetting international investors won't help the UK borrow the money it requires. As Carney said a while back. The UK needs the charity of strangers. Reputation is key.0 -
So you don't believe that immigration (and its 'spin offs' e.g visiting the doctor, undermining wages and simple racism) were a major reason? They must have been wasting their money on printing posters like this then?
Maybe we're a little sheltered on this forum & think that we are representative of the "Average Voter" Anyone who spends a bit of time outside ie social network sites such as Facebook would see that this is far from the truth.
The level of ignorance & racism is frightening. I've even seen family & (proper) friends posting stuff that I would never have thought possible. And the vast majority is coming from one side.0 -

Perhaps many are sheltered from the change in some areas.0 -

But the fact that some villages in Cornwall and Wales voted for Brexit even though they have little to no immigration suggests perception and reality don't always go hand in hand0

The problem as I see it is that for a long time prior to referendum anyone voicing concerns over immigration was branded a racist and immigration was very rarely discussed plus the problems immigration causes were not addressed by previous governments be they Labour or Tory.
Does this mean that you think the referendum result has now allowed people to express racist views that were previously considered to be unacceptable?0 -

Cornwall & Wales receive more EU funding than most other areas of the UK. And before people start telling me that it's "our money" the EU is spending, I know that. However, the EU is distributing it in a much fairer way than the UK government. The regions are benefiting rather than their taxes being spent disproportionately on London & the SE.
On a separate note. I live in a big farming area which also voted to leave. Members of the farming community stood in the local market places with stalls promoting Leave.
Immediately after the referendum, they were asking if the UK Government was going to continue giving them their CAP subsidies. I believe the same situation has occurred in Cornwall & Wales.0 -

I think some people do and have always held racist views, but the fact that for many years anybody concerned about immigration has been branded a racist has made the situation worse.
The thing that has allowed racist to express their views is social media.0
