I think some people do and have always held racist views, but the fact that for many years anybody concerned about immigration has been branded a racist has made the situation worse.
The thing that has allowed racist to express their views is social media.
I'm not disputing that. I'm saying that the referendum has made it more socially acceptable to air these views.0 -

The problem as I see it is that for a long time prior to referendum anyone voicing concerns over immigration was branded a racist and immigration was very rarely discussed plus the problems immigration causes were not addressed by previous governments be they Labour or Tory.
Impact of FOM only started once the Eastern European countries became members. Economic migration isn't going to stop anytime soon. Bedsits galore now adorn our locality.0 -
You think it socially acceptable to express racist views I don't and just because a few people do I don't think that anywhere near the majority of people do.
I don’t think its socially accepted at all.
Look at Danny Baker. I believe what he did wasn’t intentionally racist but he got the sack.
The same has happened to a few other people when they had no intentional racism e.g. as a kid I used to do ene, meme, mine, mo without any racist intention.
We are in fact highly over sensitive and easily offended.
How can any say it’s socially acceptable when the mere mention of anything racist (whether intended or not) gets people dismissed.0 -

No, only the racists were branded a racist. They didn't like it because it hurt their feelings, but they shouldn't be so racist.plus the problems immigration causes were not addressed by previous governments be they Labour or Tory.
The biggest problem was caused by the xenophobics who initially didn't want to integrate with newly arrived immigrants and so there became small pockets where immigrants concentrated and then those pockets got larger.
In areas where that didn't happen then immigrants naturally integrated and people lived happily together.
As you've given the xenophobics special privilege to be xenophobic and not to have to change their view, then there is no way to solve any of the problems.
Until you accept that voting leave is inherently xenophobic, then I don't think the country will ever be able to come back together and we will be forever divided.
And no, before you say it I'm not labelling people xenophobic undeservedly. The ball is most certainly in leave voters courts for changing their perception of people from other country. My perception of leave voters is 100% sound.0 -
