It's a complete pain having to manually add contact details from business cards, especially for people who end up collecting a lot of cards, so I felt these codes would be a big time saver for people.

It's also encouraging to hear it's being included in later versions of Android. I guess the people I tried testing it with must be using older versions.

I have the latest version of Android and it doesn't work automatically.
Although it does work if you select the Google Lens icon within the camera app (which could be something that only few phones have anyway), that also reads QR codes.
I use QR codes very often for work (as I said earlier, rarely for personal use), but it's always surprised me the fact that scanning codes with Android doesn't seem as straightforward as with iPhones.

Are you using Android 8 or 9?

They are not encrypted in any way, it's just plain text converted to squares, so even if someone included malicious links in it, you would still need to manually open it (the same applies to any link on the internet).
I think that what John Gray was trying to say was that used as a URL they obfuscate the target address.

I'm 100% for using them as contacts entries and on business cards but having a memorable URL should be your first priority.

There's been Apps around since QR codes came into being, all of the ones I've tried have been simple and quick.

I use a combined bar code / QR scanner occasionally on my Android phone and find it quite useful and easy to use.

Personally I would include it on your business card as the ability to scan in your card details makes life much easier.

No I get that, what I'm saying is that there is nothing hidden in them, when you scan a code you can clearly see what URL it contains (then you can decide if you want to open it or not), it doesn't automatically open it the moment you scan the code.

Yes, and I've used them, but I think (correct me if I'm wrong) you don't need do download any apps on iPhone in order to scan a QR code, you just open the camera and it does the job.

So instead of opening a specific App you have to open the camera App? It's not that onerous surely? That's only on older versions of Android of course as it's included in Pie as part of the excellent Google Lens.
