Reasonable grace period for late credit card payment

It recently got a late payment notice on a credit card, which I thought had a direct debit paying it. Turns out I accidentally cancelled it for n error when the debt was settled - forgetting card charges applied to that account £3 per month. Initially I thought there must have been an error with the direct debit (it’s happened to me before) but then shortly got another late payment letter. I immediately checked the account & paid the full balance of the card.
Initial payment due 10/9 - missed
Second payment due 11/10 - settled total balance of the card in full on 20/10 to avoid further problems. Reinstated Direct debit & alerts & no further problems

The credit company has refunded the late payment fee as they recognise it wasa genuine mistake (5 year history with them & never missed a payment).
My issue is they have marked 2 late payments on my credit file. I appreciate the September payment was 40 days late so fair cop but the October was only 9 days & I settled the full balance.

I think it’s unfair to get a late payment mark for the 9 day late payment. Don’t most companies only mark it if it’s 30 days over???

They say they can’t remove it because it’s accurate, which I do appreciate but we are trying to increase our mirtgage, for an extension we’ve saved 5 years for! The soft application we did wouldn’t even consider because of the two late payments.

Weboth my husband and I have “excellent “ credit scores, despite the late payments.

Have I got a right to complain using resolver form & ombudsmen than a9 day late on my credit file is unfair, compared to other companies policies? How long will the mark impact getting credit? I know it stays on fir 6 years but how needs to pass before it becomes less important - 6 months, a year (assuming all else is perfect).

I have been advised to put a note on my credit file for this account - but dint want to have opposite effect by looking like I’m making excuses but rather convey that I was responsible & took steps to ensure it didn’t happen again & ckearedthe debt.

Sorry for long post - I’m desperate to find a solution as we’ve been building up to this for 5 years & oneerrir could cost us dearly.

Thank you all

9 days late on top of the previous missed payment. On what basis are you going to complain ?

They are obliged to report the factual position which is they were late. How is it unfair to report the facts?

And ignore your pretend 'excellent' score.

You have the right to complain, just as they have the right to dismiss your complaint. It is not unfair, they are accurately reporting to the credit agencies that you missed 2 payments which other lenders would like to be aware of to consider whether to lend to you or not.

You also do not have a credit score, that's a fictional number generated by the agencies to encourage you to pay for the "services" they offer to improve the score that they gave you

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

If your salaries were paid a few days late by your employer would you mind? One cannot pick and choose when to apply contractual terms and when not to.

The impact will lessen as time goes on but they are correct to report factual account activity to the CRAs.

IMHO you are wasting your time and theirs by complaining. They were generous to refund the fees. I would not bother with the note on your file.

  • You’re lucky they refunded the late fees.

Since you admitted to cancelling the DD the onus is on you to have made sure nothing else was tied to the card.

I wouldn’t expect them to remove the markers. Be grateful they’ve refunded the charges
