After Greggs’ vegan sausage roll, what else would you veganise?

You don't need to eat them.
Do you have anything on topic to add to the thread?
Yes, as somebody that’s weighing up the pros & cons of a vegan lifestyle I’d like to know why if I were a vegan I’d need to associate my food with a system I’ve rejected i.e why call something vegan bacon when bacon involves the murder of pigs? Surely I’d want to call it something else.... no?
Also I’d feel a bit strange eating a vegan meal in McDonalds when bloke next to me was stuffing a bacon double cheese burger down their gullet washing it down with a milkshake followed by an ice-cream sundae. Could you please advise as lots of vegans are jumping for joy that McDonalds are offering Vegan meals.
Thankyou

It's mainly nooch (Aldi are selling cheap nutritional yeast at the moment!) for flavour, some use agar which is hard to find (I've seen it in Asda, though!) but I made a version with cornstarch to thicken and it was like a slightly more robust soft cheese. Pretty tasty!
Not identical to dairy cheese, but as you say, we're not trying to replicate anything, we just want something to eat with crackers :rotfl:
I've been vegan 12 years. Trust me when I say you're spoiled for choice re dairy alternatives that don't taste like  these days compared to back then!
Thanks for the suggestion. It's something I have heard about but thought it would be complicated. You make it sound doable. I will give it a go and share how I get on.Stashbusting 2019 - 230/3000 -

I'll try to answer your questions as best I can from my own experience
Again, bacon is not a body part. It is a word to which people can relate. If I buy plant based bacon I can expect it to be maybe chewy and smoky. I know it is not a pig so have no problem eating it. I can eat a plant based nugget and not associate it with part of a dead bird.
I think you may be getting tied up in the words used to describe foods and also the idea that veganism is merely a diet or way of eating. It is a boycott of cruelty.
Regarding McDonalds, I think their introduction of more vegan options is a good thing as it brings veganism into the mainstream and gives their customers more choice. They are not making any grand ethical statement, we are just another revenue stream for them, but that's fine. They have had a vegan burger/wrap option for a long time so this is nothing new. I would use the drive-thru or takeaway myself because, as you rightly guessed, I don't like being around those eating meat, but this is just my personal preference.0 -

Has anyone been following the Vegan cookery programme called 'D1rty Vegan' on BBC Wales? I'm not in the TV reception area, so have been using the eye-player to watch it.
The presenter is Matthew Pritchard, who is a self-proclaimed vegan. He's a trained chef, endurance athlete and some people may also recall him as 'Pritch' from his professional skateboarding days, and appearances on a now legendary mtv show..........
It's a watchable 30 minute prog - I think there are 6 episodes (?), where MP goes round Wales, trying to promote vegan food to non-vegans. There are snippets about nutrition and products which might be new to some people - he discovers how to make tempeh at home for example, and uses aqua faba to make meringues.
As ever, TV progs have to be about 'entertainment' so there is quite a bit of sillyness that doesn't add to the programme, but then I guess they don't get made, do they? Certainly the 3 programmes so far have showcased produce and businesses within Wales that are catering for the vegan market, and the market garden in episode one is just a vegetable eaters delight - I'd love to live next door! And I have to say, he met his match in the Chairwoman of the Swansea WI who gamefully accepted his challenge - at the end of episode 2 I think.
In these days of marketing, there is, of course, a cookery book to accompany the series, same name as the programme, and Matthew is the principal author as far as I can remember. I think I would borrow it from the library for a look if I saw it on the shelf. But I agree with others that have mentioned accessing vegan recipes etc online for free.
Further up the thread, Scrambled egg replacement was mentioned - certainly in the series, Scrambled Silken Tofu is made - with kala namak, and 'Fake-on' (instead of bacon) was featured in a cafe, but I'm not sure if the recipe has been given - might have been chef's own. It was based on chickpea flour and smoked paprika, anyway.
The presenter is an interesting character, the BBC also did a documentary on him - I don't know if that is still on playback, you certainly have to be accepting of o rather a lot of 'rood words' if you do decide to watch it - but it is an interesting watch, about how lives can be turned around.....

Just looked at the iPlayer and that's an understatement - on the promo pic for episode 3 he looks quite deranged!Greying_Pilgrim wrote: »The presenter is an interesting character, the BBC also did a documentary on him - I don't know if that is still on playback, you certainly have to be accepting of o rather a lot of 'rood words' if you do decide to watch it - but it is an interesting watch, about how lives can be turned around.....

He's actually quite a nice chap - just used to acting up a bit for the camera - which is what TV producers seem to like, but adds nowt to the factuality nor interest of the programme - imho.
There is no rudeness in the cookery programmes, the profanity was contained in the BBC Wales documentary about him, I think it was called something like 'Wildman to Ironman' - and was clearly labelled as containing adult content on the playback. Whilst the archive footage showed where he had 'come from' and highlighted the struggles he has overcome, there was probably too much of it and it detracted from the feat that he undertook, which was a swimming/cycling/walking challenge around Wales - which was an epic achievement, by anyone's endurance sport standards.
As far as I know, D1rty Vegan is the first vegan cookery programme to be on the BBC. It's far from perfect, but in many ways it is a good attempt to highlight food and recipes that people may, or may not, wish to learn more about.

Greying Pilgrim Thank you so much for the info on the Vegan programme. I hadn't heard of it and have let our local Vegan group know as it sounds really interesting, particularly for the new Veganuary members.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14
