See if your local council has any business start up grants available. I live in Wirral and I got £500 to help with my photography business. The grants go up to £2000 if you live in certain areas of Wirral but unfortunately I don't

If you are trainined in something then this should be a good starting point for you. All the best.

Agin bridal mags would be reaching a huge audience and you only need to reach a fraction. How about contacting hotelos and asking about their wedding fayres. Hotels produce their own wedding brochures which would be much cheaper to advertise in.

You could also advertise in the local papers, wedding dress shops, hairdressers - without salons attached.

You could always become a virgin vie rep. You get the kit much cheaper, have parties where you do make overs and sell make up and jewellery.

    Hi Mennie

Wedding fayres are too expensive to attend in the area I live in. Usually £200+ for a table etc.

The local paper wanted £90 + vat for a small advert.

The wedding dress shops are also no good as the people that run them are well all I can say is weird.... very weird and snooty!

I`ve worked as a Virgin Vie consultant years ago, but couldnt get enough parties booked. :o Plus I have a couple of friends doing it too.

    Thanks for your help though
  • Hi PPP,
Perhaps scale down a bit to start? Children's or adult's pamper parties would be good practice, use your beauty skills & get you 'out there'. This would bring some money in soonish & build your confidence for bigger things. Working with a hairdresser is a good idea, perhaps plan a feature 'wedding day' hair & make-up
trial for discount? May entice a few bride-to-be s & be more relaxing atmosphere
at a hairdresser's. (Also they'll have a regular client base to advertise to) Just an idea, I hope it works out for you.

    :)

Just a suggestion for advertising for your make up service. Has your childrens school got a notice board, as my friend advertises on her childrens school board and gives a donation to the school each year for them allowing her to do so..

I think this is a great idea, and something that I think would definitely work. It would get your name out there and then advertise for weddings too.

Kids nowadays are having these pamper parties younger than ever. My daughters friends have been having them in salons:eek: for the last couple of years. You could set the same sort of limit and say you'd cater for a certain amount of children at a party (depending on the time limit and what you are offering). Perhaps theres a friend who could help you out too?

Someone who I know had a pamper party for a Hen night...so something else you could suggest. Especially for the bride and bridesmaids a week or so before...offer facials, massages etc if you're trained in that way.

For advertising, how about a good old fashioned leaflet drop in your area...I know it takes time, but its easy and cheaper. We did this when my oh went self employed and work even came in weeks after, where people had put the leaflet on one side. We divided our town up and decided to deliver a certain amount every day and it worked really well.

    Good luck

Last year I worked for a company called Directory Distribution Company (DDC) supervising and delivering the Yellow Pages on a short term contract. Although you needed to work pretty hard for the money, on the plus side you could negociate your own hours within a certain timescale (great when kids are at school). As I understand it DDC have to apply for the contract again this year but I would imagine are highly likely to get as as their delivery rate was so high. In addition they also have people employed on short term contracts ringing up individuals all over the country to see if they have recieved their copy of the directory.

If anyone is interested I could dig out some further details as I am thinking of doing the Supervisor role again this year if I can work it around my other job.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Im a bit concerned that people are getting sick of virgin vie parties, pamper parties etc. Loads of people are doing them.

Also forgot to mention I have a phobia of dogs and am allergic to cats! This makes it harder to do what I want to do.

Ideally I would like to use a room in my house and have clients visit me. Does anyone know the rules and regulations on doing this??

Your local councill will be able to provide you with all the regulations, & you will need insurance too.
If you live in a big city, try offering makeup lessons to the trannys, they will pay for this sort of service

  • I have been off work for a few weeks with stress and really dont want to go back but need to for the money.

Ive been looking at loads of ways that I can stay at home and earn some money. OH works but I like to earn my own money.

I have tried making cards, which bombed as I was only selling to my Mum and Sister cos I didnt know where else I could sell them. We dont have small gift stores etc where I live to do sale or return and craft fairs arent an option either as I dont seem to fit in with the craft clique! My cards are really nice as well... o well!:o

I also tried selling Clip in hair extensions via ebay but that also bombed as I was making around 30p from each one after all fees and cost of goods, so it wasnt worth it.

Hi, Have you tried registering as a virgin vie consltant. I did this for a little while and you have to pay for the kit (about 200 quid, but it's worth a whole lot more...) then you can quit.....you have instant makeup that is lovely for weddings....
Alternatively carry on doing it as you can get lots of really excellent freebies if you are successful.
Good luck, hope it works out for you.
