Joint bank account with wife who has no credit history

Options
My wife is Chinese and recently moved here. I want to get my bank accounted converted to a joint one with her name on it.

She has no credit history in Europe at all, should would be starting from zero. She doesn't work either (housewife). Obviously I trust her not to run up debts etc (she is very frugal), but someone told me that it could affect my credit rating by having someone with no history with access to my account.

Possibly, but I wouldn't consider it an issue unless she has negative history.

Get her on the ER, get her a a simple only contract in her name, and stick the wife on the joint account. Won't be an issue
  • Not really since you don’t have a credit rating or score to taint.

If you are financially linked via a joint account then when you apply for financial products, she could also be credit checked as part of the application.
Having no history can on times be as hindering as bad history.

Is she is able to have a current account of her own? register on the ER and build her own history.

Is there any reason you want to add her to the joint account now?

  • Unless you are planning on remortgaging in the very near future, or have any fears she may rack up debts on the account, then I would say there's not much to worry about and it will be more beneficial in the long term than any temporary "dip" in your (completely random) credit score.

  • Thanks everyone. The reason I want her on there is to help solidify her immigration status. If I don't do it the Home Office will try to claim our marriage is a sham.

I will be looking for PCP on a car later this year. Maybe a new rental agreement or mortgage, depends on how bad brexit ends up being.
