As far as I know, you can't switch from First Direct to HSBC and get the bonus.
You can be a FD customer, but in order to get the bonus from HSBC, you need to switch from a different bank that has nothing to do with HSBC, which means neither First Direct nor Marks & Spencer bank.

There's a link on "HSBC vs first direct" thread that indicates that you can switch from FD to HSBC and pick up the bonus.

It is wrong indeed. However! As far as I know, you can't switch from First Direct to HSBC and get the bonus.

    2d suggests SlovakianGuy is correct

I think EarthBoy has misinterpreted the T&Cs

Existing HSBC customers are not eligible. However, for the purposes of this offer, customers of First Direct and M&S are not defined as HSBC customers.

    OK so far, BUT

The account being switched in must not be from any in the HSBC group i.e First Direct and M&S

Hmm, I fear you are correct. Looking at the T&Cs, you must:
switch your bank account to us from another UK bank
or building society which is outside the HSBC Group that
participates in the Current Account Switch Service
    Bummer.
