How much should I pay for a VPN
Comments

I have been using Kodi on My Amazon Fire Stick watching a variety of programmes for over a year without any problems. I do not have a VPN installed, so why would I require one now0

It looks like you can subscribe to a Cyberghosts VPN for approximately 2.70 a month for 18 months but you will have to pay the full 18 months in full up front. it still seems a good deal. You can also get 3 months free with the Express VPN which might be a way to try it out. it you use Kodi for everything on a fairly regular basis then I suggest a VPN is really necessary.0

My wifedied a while ago and my family recently gave me an Amazon Fire stick as a present. They set it up forme and explsined how it worked. I have been using it successfully for a few weeks without any problems. They also downloaded the Kodi Spp and some others for me. However they did not say anything about installing a VPN which is discussed in this post. Is this something i should be getting bearing in my I am on a limited income.0

Ignore the scaremongering and just carry on using your firestick. There is no need for a VPN0

VPNs are typically used for privacy, security when using public wi-fi and to appear as though you are in a different location so you can watch shows only available in other countries.
While VPNs are extremely useful there is no need for you to get one just for using a Fire Stick at home. Save your money.0 -

Depends on your level of paranoia.
Now I cannot be bothered to use dodgy streaming as the real stuff is cheap enough these days (I will admit to using differnet netflix areas, though that is more a grey area).
The arguments goes.
Streaming is not downloading. Well whoever said that is obviously not an expert in computers. If it is not downloaded it cannot be watched. The differnece is you are not keeping it and it only goes in your browser or streaming clients cache.
Please note people have been prosecuted for having dodgy !!!!!! pics in their cache so ther is no reason they could not held responsible for video (although streaming clinets may remove the steam after you disconect, I have never looked into it much). The main problem is it would require someone with a lot of technicaly knowledge to do so and also be on the side of the court. Most technicaly people would not be but there is always someone wanting money over eveything.
What may happen in the future? Who knows. if we get closer ties with the americans I would expect that illegal streams will start to be punished is they work out a way to do so. Still they cannot seem to run their country at the moment so who knows.
So right now it is a choose your risk/cost level and do what you like.
There are many other reasons to use a VPN anyway, so if it was the only reason you had maybe it's not worth it.0 -
The Opera browser has a 'built-n' VPN which you can switch on and off at will, don't know if that's of any use for folks to experiment with?

Likewise. But then when a VPN is free I don't think you can expect much. Also, NordVPN say this of Opera:The questionable component is the free built-in VPN that Opera acquired in 2016. Like many VPNs offered as free extras (here’s looking at you, Facebook!), it tracks bandwidth and usage logs. Besides, Opera itself is owned by a company based in a country notorious for privacy infringement
I believe the country they're referring to is China.
We're going OT here but I think the other poster was making the point that if you are using the internet to breach copyright that while no one seems to get more than a warning from their ISP in this country we do not know if they will take a harder line in the future. I personally don't think they will but you never know.
It should be clear though that VPNs are not illegal or for illegal activity per se but they can certainly hide your tracks.
My main reason it that I wanted to anonymise my searches so I now use DuckDuckGo and NordVPN. What little streaming I do is Netflix, YouTube and iPlayer, which are legal.0
