Wow, three pages to read and I've only missed a couple of days.
I've had a lovely time on the plot. I've abandoned my crutches and am making myself walk unaided somewhat slowly as its unlevel ground
I managed to move some asparagus as it was in the way, fortunately its only two years old.
I've continued with pricking out and potting up and moving things on.
Under cover I've planted out 2 cucumbers, 6 sweet potatoes (this is the first year I've tried them) some early potatoes, plus dwarf beans, fennel, beetroot, kohl rabi. mangetout all grown fromseeds so hopefully they should survive especially if I remember to close the doors at night.
Outside I've glyphocated the paths and some of the beds as they are a bit overgrown but I still find it difficult to dig due to the knee. I've managed to get a couple of beds ready to plant some of my maincrop potatoes today but I'm a great fan of the 'no dig method' for potatoes so it shouldn't be too hard.
I'm really enjoying the veg plot this year, it's the first year in a long long time that I've actually got time to do it.0 -
Ooh zaf - very interested in how the sweet potatoes go.Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)

My seedlings are coming along well, I have regular, cherry and beef toms all with proper leaves and getting bigger. I think I may transplant into pots over the weekend. I know I must not damage the stems and basically be as gentle as possible. I also have one jalapeno seedling but that is still too small for transplanting. I am still waiting for courgette and marrow but they were planted a few weeks after the toms.
The raspberry canes I got free from the council are in flower, the three blueberry bushes are coming along nicely and I planted some strawberry runners in the week so hopefully I'll have something to show for it in the coming months!0 -
I haven't posted for a while so I am just catching up and its good to hear what everyone is up to.
Talking of nettles I made some nettle fertilizer and wow that stuff smells. Its free though and we have plenty of nettles so will keep making it and hold my nose. I don't think you could convince me to make nettle soup though.
My greenhouse is bursting at the seams and the tomatoes are growing big so I need to put the toms/cucumber staying in the greenhouse in growbags and take out all the other plants and seedlings.
I am hoping to move it all to my plastic greenhouse on sunday as we might get a frost here sat night so I am leaving it until then. I have my dahlias still in the greenhouse but should hopefully be able to plant them out monday!
I have gone a bit mad and made a further 5 beds for flowers. With the no dig system weeds on the beds are few and far apart at the moment but its the paths between beds that are becoming a problem. Half the paths haven't been covered with anything so I have lots of awkward paths to mow this weekend amongst other jobs.
I am loving growing my own and haven't bought salad for a few weeks now. I had a couple of growbags in the greenhouse with spinach and cut and come lettuce which has served me well the last few weeks. The lettuce, chard and spinach in the ground is now starting to grow well so I can get rid of my greenhouse lettuce.
My spring onions in a growbag in the greenhouse are starting to look a bit chunkier (I had to stop myself picking one for lunch!) the ones in the ground outside still look fairly weedy yet.
Lets hope we have some good gardening weather this weekend.0 -
Not much to report here, chemo & steroid mayhem should be out of my system tomorrow, weekend here is forecast dry but maybe 10˚C max with cold maybe frosty nights, so I might just get a bit of lawn edging done and tackle some lawn re-seeding - maybe a small bonfire if the conditions are right - with sausage sandwiches...
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Will be dead heading here. I may risk potting on the tomato plants and putting them and the cucumbers into the greenhouse.Spend less now, work less later.0

Another one here will be interested to hear how the sweet potatoes go on. Think I looked at having a go but seemed a bit complicated.
Meeting my Dad at the plot today. He seems to have lost interest and Ive been asking him for weeks to help me empty the compost bins. I have made a start myself but it really plays my back up.
Strawberries are full of flowers so need to organise some netting for them. Still have pepper and chilli plants on dining room table and debating taking them to repot. Look really healthy.
General tidying and weeding will also need doing. Never ending job.
Ooh just glanced outside and looks like rain. And its blowing a gail.

Apparently not going to get above 10 degrees here today and there has been a flurry of snow just a few miles away so I may have to rethink my plans. I also need to put netting over the three strawberry beds. The birds are showing an interest. Need to add extra netting to the broad beans too as the birds have attacked that.Spend less now, work less later.0
