I could be mistaken, but don't rats predate on slugs ? You just need to sow a trail of lettuce off into the distance.
I don't even kill wasps anymore, unless they start something first (because there's nothing worse when you have balance issues and can't run away)
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Well, I wrapped the plants up as best I could. With bubble wrap and bottles and foam. Some had double layers. Here's hoping it was enough! Set for a low of 1 now! Brrr!
ETA: actually says low of 0 predicted now. Fingers crossed they survive!!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
In my case slugs get flushed down the outside loo. Neighbours are used to me prowling around with a torch and rubber gloves on. Hopefully tonight's cold will keep them at home as I've been to training and had a hot bath and I'm not going out tonight!
I had tremendous casualties amongst my young beans last year so ended up protecting them in certain areas with cans with both lids cut off and copper tape around it, and also a few plastic pastry cutters similarly garnished. It seemed to help them get the start they needed without er... disappearing!0 -

Yay ! Our favourite slug and snail remover is back !
Mr S spotted Spike the hedgehog doing his rounds last night. Bit early for slugs, so we gave him (her?) a dish of cat food, which went down a treat.0 -
My Brussels sprouts seeds have germinated outside despite two days of frosty starts.Spend less now, work less later.0

Just come back in from 6-7 hours out there - with breaks of course, now I'm nackered. Repotted a couple of Padron peppers then thought better of it, as I'm running out of space in the house. Lowest greenhouse temperature 0.3˚C on Tuesday I think (last night was warmer) so I'm not going put my peppers or toms in there until maybe Sunday. I repotted some Sedum after pulling all the couch grass out, and sowed Teasels (in a tray) & Cornflower in pots, took delivery of two parcels, and made a broom. I'll hopefully manage a couple of hours tomorrow and put some salad leaves in the cold frame.

My greenhouse is unheated as well. My half hardy annual seeds are in there, but my chilli and pepper seedlings are still on the spare bedroom windowsill (which has a sign on the door stating that the cat must not be allowed into this room under any circumstances !)0 -
I had a bit of a Satori moment last night - I've a nice bit of shelf in the studio for when I need a bit of extra work space. Why not bring that downstairs for the extra seedlings ???
Definite frost last night, I'm popping out shortly to get some rhubarb, then taking a day off from outy doorsy - I'll try and remember to note last night's greenhouse temp
Edited to add: Blimey - minus 0.7˚C

Thanks to whoever mentioned the kneeling stool. I looked it up and I'm definitely going to treat myself to one.
After hunkering down for ages doing whatever in the garden it took me ages getting up! And I'm only 51! Got dodgy knees and hips though.
I was going to get myself one of those spongy kneeling mats as I had one before but the kneeling stool thingy looks perfect.
Are they all much of a muchness or should I avoid or go for anything in particular? Just thinking about sturdiness etc.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D
