Thanks Primrose! I have brought in some of them and put a double layer of fleece over the others to be on the safe side. Much rolling of eyes from my family. My lounge now looks like a garden centre.

I'd go for a couple of deep cardboard boxes (sans candle) and keep them well off floor level. Looking at my calendar, I put my tomatoes in the greenhouse 6th April last year

I will have to get some boxes organised if the cold is to carry on so long. I also have that very thick air-filled packing material which I could lay on top, as it's so light.

Today on and off I have had the deeply satisfying job of washing out and organising some used pots given to me - hundreds of them! I think it's important to get as much use as possible from plastic now rather than just sling it after one use. Many more await me tomorrow!

Interesting, because not one of the chillis I got in a 'kit' for xmas have germinated yet - I'll be sure to look it up

Erm - should I tell you.....three of the Nagas you gave me have germinated in a heated propagator after just over a week. Give them time, they will show their heads when they have had enough warmth.

Yes I think I realised that my chillis are not in the best position, the prime location(s) being dominated by my tomatoes & chinese mahogany. Think I might move the chillis right now (cat permitting)

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Guess what I found had emerged this morning

In other news, it's a glorious day and warming up quite nicely - should manage about five hours then fish & chips for tea

On the subject of plants that help break clay soil up. I am planning on rotating potatoes in my heavy clay soil beds over the next few years. What other recommendations do you have to help beak clay soil down?
I'm thinking beetroot, pumpkin/squash and Swede.

I've been adding loads of organic matter over the years, but I'd be interested in any answers to that question too :)

I am planning on adding well rotted manure to a couple of beds and covering but my entire plot is heavy clay soil and is also quite moist as there is a spring that basically waters the plot in all but the driest months.

I used white mustard - the added advantage over other green manures being it's also edible

Good old kitchen compost & leaf mold is good too - a bit of everything

My chillies have completely stunted and in 4 week's are still no further than seed leaves.
Had a delivery of seeds from Premier which is always exciting, till I went up the plot and brought home a bag of seeds from there and realising is ordered again some Kale, despite already having 3 lots in the shed!
Also have some okra and cucamelons to try. Should be interesting.

Still no further on clearing the polytunnel space alas, and rains predicted for the week - eurgh! Will attempt to placate myself with some seed sowing at home in the mini greenhouse.
