CAFCgirl, glad to hear your scan wasn't too bad, it did remind me when I had to have one and choose Queen as the music, the first track was Who wants to live forever! I think they were trying to tell me something:eek:::eek:

Their CD player was broken so I couldn't have my own CD on,but had the radio through them instead. The last song in the first machine was Bubl!'s 'Home' - which was incidentally on the CD I had taken, so I came out humming, and continued humming whilst waiting to go in the second machine 'let me go hoooooooome' LOL

    Went up the plot yesterday.
A pathway dug out, strawberries weeded, a bed weeded out and sowed some beans, beetroot and lettuce.
Topped up the pond which has split levels as the smaller section was FULL of tadpoles so now they've been granted 'freedom of movement' LOL

Today I've done some cabbages at home.

Woke up to quite a frost this morning and at 10am it is only 3C so just as well all my babies are in huge trays on the sitting room floor! Quite a lot of them need moving on to bigger pots so I will have to devise a way of keeping them frost-free in the greenhouse, like a mini plastic one inside with a candle maybe. Layers of fleece will keep them cosy but not if the temperatures outside are as low as they are for the next few days.

Sleet here last night, evidence of a hard frost too. It's still pretty cold here too but the sun is out. Forecast is saying overnight temperatures are going to be 4-6˚C for next 10 days or so

I'd go for a couple of deep cardboard boxes (sans candle) and keep them well off floor level. Looking at my calendar, I put my tomatoes in the greenhouse 6th April last year

    Edited to add:
Just checked in the greenhouse - minimum temp 0.1˚C last night

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Anyone struggling with germinating chilli seeds. If you soak them in cooled black tea for 24-48 hours it helps them germinate once planted. There is a YouTube channel called chilli chump who explains why it works

I wasn't aware of that but they are poor germinators and slow growers. Ideally you need to start them in January and keep them over 20 degrees C - which is a difficult combination.

Even then it can be 4 weeks before some of the bu88ers get started.

Does anyone know if dahlia in pots will survive in the greenhouse overnight? They were in the greenhouse last night grouped together with a fleece over. The forecast was -1 last night and we woke to a light frost.

Forecast says 1 degrees for tonight but it feels much colder today than yesterday - I don't know if that is because I have come down with the lurgy and am feeling the chill. I am contemplating bringing the Dahlia pots in but I think it might be the final straw for my other half as nearly half the greenhouse still comes in every night!

Also will strawberries be OK uncovered in beds or should they be covered?

My strawberry plants are left out in an open border all year round and always seem to survive whatever the cold weather throws at them

Dahlias as somewhat less hardy but if covered over by some fleece or an old net curtain in the greenhouse will hopefully be ok.
