He downloaded the tool, then tried running the upgrade and it just said " sorry we are having trouble determing if your PC can run windows 10" so thats literally all that happened

I personally think its an issue from upgrading from windows 8 to 10 years ago and the SSD but i might be wrong completely

    Right
step 1. go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and download an ISO image of your version of Win 10 "create windows media" rather than upgrade

step 2. Ensure that you have backed up any files
step 3. Check and write down your installation key (obtainable from running magical jellybean

step 4 create media on DVD / USB
step 5 run media and install fresh windows

    good luck !

you have enough free space? No, you do not find free space by doing diskpart and typing "list disk". Typing this will though diskmgmt.msc

if you have enough free space:
Click Start (Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.)
    Type: cmd
Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'
    Type: WSReset.exe
    Hit Enter
    Type: net stop wuauserv
    Hit Enter
    Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    Hit Enter
    Type: net start wuauserv
    Hit Enter
    Type: exit
    Hit Enter

did try the above but no joy, i'm sure it cant be as complex as it seems, I really didnt want to do a fresh install when upgrading should be so easy, but it seems my windows doesnt seem to want to play ball.

I must have upgraded from windows 8 at some point years ago, so wondering if its something i did then

have you fiddled with the firewall?

    Which version of windows 10?

    is this a corporate PC?

How much free space do you have?

Also there could be a hardware issue where the currently are no updates past a certain point.
    ####
    you have run malware bytes?
    you have done a chkdsk c: /f /r
    and sfc /scannow
there was a post that contained extra command, but the post is now missing (thanks mse) https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947821.
    What does the CheckSUR.log say?

Have just run Malware bytes and it fixed some issues, thanks for that.

Regarding chkdsk, have done that and all seemed to run fine. Regarding the link you sent in last message

I have tried this as suggested
Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    and it comes up with
error 1009, The configuration registry database is corrupt
so it's potentially that I dont quite know how to fix.

    Thanks for your help

I have over 40gb of free space, and its not a corporate PC

Its unning windows 10 home, 1607 Edition currently

Your best (simplest) way forwards is a reinstall of Windows !!
You have (just) enougn room - but could do with more !!

Just realised that this error could be linked to MS decision to stop support of 1607 ...
    https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-ends-windows-10-version-1607-support-home-and-pro-users
and could be solved by a single file download from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=46c4fe1f-ec95-4025-8467-b1832e26ff22

or use a USB stick - much cheaper and simpler ...
how much do you have of files to back up ?
you could also do it on-line (One drive or similar ?)
