Unless it’s extremely well hidden there is no option to back up to Google Drive.

But do you have Google drive installed?

I was going to try this, but it means updating ios and if it doesn't work I won't bother. . .

So it looks like my advice was useless and you have to back up a WhatsApp account on an iPhone to an iCloud account.

But how do you access the iCloud on an Android phone to recover your WhatsApp chats etc..?

I see Android apps for syncing iCloud but only for contacts, mail etc...
    Evolution, not revolution

I haven't used an iPhone in a while but i would say the easiest way to do it would be to backup the messages to iCloud then go onto the icloud app on the iPhone and copy it to some other service such as Dropbox and then access that on the Android phone.

I'm not sure what format it backs it up in but you may even be able to email it to yourself from iCloud if it's just a couple of files then open the email on the Android phone.

There’s only an on/off toggle for WhatsApp in the iCloud settings and I don’t think there is such a thing as an iCloud app on the phone (I haven’t seen one even after searching).

If you post an AppStore link to the app you’re referring to and I’ll download it and see what it shows.

I've just fired up my ancient Ipad 3 and went into; settings - iCloud - iCloud Drive and there is an option to "show on home screen".

This then gave me access to an app called "iCloud Drive"

On this i was able to select a file which was in the drive and press the square box with and arrow in it (share icon?). I then had a "copy to dropbox" option and other options such as email etc.

I already had the dropbox app installed so i assume you should be able to do similar on an iPhone?.

    That doesn’t exist.

Closest would be Settings - iCloud - iCloud Manage Storage - WhatsApp Messenger and the only option in there is “delete backup”.

iCloud Drive is just an on/off toggle.

Yea looking online it seems newer IOS versions work a different way:

"iCloud Drive is now stored within the Files app for iOS 11"

Can you access and copy the files to dropbox using these instructions:

    Launch the Files app
Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen.
Tap iCloud Drive in the Locations section.
Tap on a folder to open it.

That only shows the stuff I’ve actually uploaded to iCloud Drive.
