To be honest I asked advice on the asbestos and lead paint. I didn’t ask for a lecture as a lecture solves nothing. Can’t change anything so his comment isn’t helpful at all. I was asking specific advice and he offered none otherthan to lecture me on sonthing already done

Anxiety is extreme or misdirected or irrational fears. You are panicking about miniscule risks whilst dismissing the very real dangers of bodged DIY. You can repair the damage and stick to decorating.

What is not helpful in panic disorders is for people to play along and normalise the irrational. You are not a silly child needing soothing words, you are a smart woman, mother and wife.

If your family doctor offers you talking therapies/ counselling or suchlike take them up on it. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Technique) is about you learning to recognise and challenge your own thought patterns, feelings and behaviours at a very early stage.

That is a lecture from someone with fifteen years personal experience of anxiety. I am rubbish at CBT. :o

... especially if the plaster has horsehair in it. ;)

Hair used in lime plasters can be from any number of animals. Whilst horse is likely to be most common, goat, cow, and even pig could be present. Being natural fibres, they won't pose any health risks greater than most other natural materials found in the average home.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

When I first moved into this property ( 8 years ago) I did email my housing about asbestos whether there is anything I need to be aware of and I’ve just found this email which I totally forgot about until now, it reads ‘die to the age of your property being 1935 we don’t expect much asbestos to be In the fabric of he building although some insulation might come contain asbestos. And then they give me a small report of some ‘presumed’ asbestos items and they are ‘sink pad insulating board’ and ‘adhesive tiles’
I’m gussing tiles in kitchen floor but I’ve tiled my kitchen with ceramic tiles so can’t see them being an issue when left alone I’m guessing. I’m just hoping that if the ceiling did contain asbestos it wouldn’t be on this list

Why can’t pejple give advice on the issue I asked for, what’s the point In Lecturing me highten my anxiety for some thing already done? Why not advise on the issue I put out there’s
It isn't "lecturing" to point out the very real risks associated with an inexperienced DIYer making holes in someone else's ceiling and carrying out electrical work beyond their skill level.

You've come to the forum for advice on Asbestos and Lead, but it is wholly unreasonable for you to expect people with experience or knowledge of the subject not to point out the far more serious and obvious risks involved in the question you are asking.

People are not pointing this out to 'lecture' or scare you, just to make you aware of things which will help you to keep yourself and your family safer in the future. People who contribute to this forum have a moral (and in some cases professional) responsibility to give good advice. You are free to ignore that advice if you wish, but it is wrong for you to criticise it.

I was thinking of a specific risk which could be associated with any of those animal hair types. The risk is usually very low, but sufficient to make the point that eating lime plaster shouldn't be considered a zero-risk activity (I'm not saying that is what you said, only that it might be interpreted that way by others).

In deference to the OP's wishes I won't expand on that point, especially as the risk is likely to be very low, but anyone involved in construction who doesn't know what I mean and/or is interested in the subject could spend a few minutes on google, or PM me if they prefer.

    What is the risk?

To be honest I just came on here for some advice whether the ceiling from this era with the description I give could have been asbestos. I can’t even sit in my front room now or let my kids on thereby now due to the possibility there’s harmful stuff Around ( even though every ring is plastered up now) and had to get rid of an expensive sofas due to this so I’m not having a great time due to this

If you have any doubts about any materials containing asbestos or lead paint in your house, it would be best to have them tested.
  • And just to add, we only installed the extra lighting because our home gets very very dark even in the daytime in winter because we have big trees and bushes all round our back garden ( our living room is at the back of the house) so we get no natural light and we not allowed to just cut trees down. We knew the council would never do this for us so we didn’t see an issue with us doing it ourselves. I regret now with the dangers I’ve put us through!
