Sounds exciting. We moved from London to Cornwall 30 years ago and that felt like a massive move at the time.

Apologies if I missed your explanation of this but is the £45k mortgage repayment or endowment? If repayment, aren't the payments astronomical as only over 5 years? Or is there another plan to repay it if you aren't selling your existing house?

your big life change sounds reassuring as you didnt go back :):) so thanks for that

its 45k and will be paid off in a bulk sum in three years time
due to an investment we have it is cheaper to do that than cash out investment - that is why the first three years will be very very frugal
we will have a private pension my esa state pension and £500+ rent coming in which sounds like a lot but its still much less than an income we were used to due to the mortgage that is temporary
we can afford the cottage outright (just) the mortgage is to allow for a few repairs and new things for her eg boiler and heating and for a few bits for new place and what is left over will just go to pay a lump sum off the loan until the rest can be paid off

as I say its got to the worrying/scary/excited time - think due to mental health the scary is at the top
tomorrow going out for lunch then back to the packing
    Emergency fund £10,000
    Several categories with savings in
    Cars, house maintenance, birthdays
Etc I have about 10 categories

Really happy to be debt free after being a compulsive spender

Yes, that makes sense. If it is interest only then the repayments should be more than manageable with low interest rates.

I always think moving is scary no matter how prepared you are for it. Sounds like you have thought of everything though and what you haven't can be dealt with. No, we never regretted leaving the rat race of London as it was then and have been very happy in Cornwall and our daughters loved living there. We were told we were making a mistake and we would regret it but would not be able to afford to come back but we never did regret it. I don't enjoy city living and my husband hated driving in London. He had further distances to cover for work in Devon and Cornwall but no where near as much traffic. We are only just over the border from Devon though so not right in the depths of Cornwall. I always say we retired 30 years earlier than everyone else as many people we knew were retiring to the West Country.

I think you will be more rural than we are and having all that space sounds lovely for your dogs. All those lovely walks too. We had loads of visitors initially so be prepared for that. I think Wales is a bit easier for people to get to than Cornwall so you may get more people visiting. We also did not have as much room to put people up as we have a 4 bed house but having 2 small children we only had 1 small guest room.

Treats are the best aren't they :) And what a lovely thing for you to do giving birthday money early so DD and DS early so they can book some things in Rome.

Not long til the move now then. Exciting but scary and stressful, even more so if you have MH issues, but you'll get there. One day at a time and all that. It will all be worth it in the end.

    Have a lovely Sunday. xx
  • just popping bye to say hello and hope all is well, not long to go
