Anti Theft Device

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good anti theft device I can buy for my car?

I've got a Fiesta Zetec S - 2012 model.

Apparently it has a built in immobiliser already, but I want to increase the security if I can.

Someone recommended an OBD lock, but I'm not sure how these work?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated 😊

Thanks.

Ultimately you cannot prevent someone coming along with a car transporter and towing it away. A manufacturer fitted immobiliser is more than sufficient to prevent someone from driving it away and is so good that car thieves are having to resort to burgling houses and stealing the keys in order to steal the car. It has long since ceased to be the case you could jemmy the ignition and the car would start. Cars from the last 20 years have had a transponder inside the key that talks to a sensor on the ignition switch which sends a code to the ECU and if the code isn't there the car won't start even if they can turn the ignition switch.

Aftermarket car security other than a vehicle tracker and maybe locking wheel nuts is pretty much a waste of time nowadays.

Anyone who's had a Ford Transit stolen will tell you that's not the case.
  • I dont know if this is true or how it works, but I've been told my neighbour has a device fitted to his car such that even if you have the key it wont start until you press a (defined by the user) combination of internal controls, indicator, headlights, etc

As the others have said there are many visible deterrents
something is better than nothing, but nothing 100% guarantees unstealable. Just ask any chop shop .

Yes, we'll take that as granted.

Afraid you are very misinformed on most of the above. Indeed breaking into properties and stealing keys is a lot more common now than it was. But so is breaking a drivers window, reaching into the OBD port and using a device which should only be in the hands of car dealerships and car security mechanics to programme a new key for the vehicle and drive off. Literally gone in 60 seconds.

Plus the newer phenomenon of relay theft where the signal from a car key inside the property is relayed to the vehicle outside, making the vehicle think the key is present so allowing opening, starting and driving away of the vehicle.

Nope, as suggested above a whole wheel cover such as Disklok and even a wheel clamp will at the very least act as a deterrent and send the thief to a less well protected vehicle.

Also worthwhile (on a Ford at least) getting the OBD port moved and hidden or protected.

A visible deterrent, such as a disklok, is probably your best and most cost effective bet. Unless you've got something special being stolen to order most car thieves are opportunist and don't want to spend too much time messing with yours if there's an easier target a few doors down.

It's a 6yo cooking Fiesta. How high a theft risk is it? Do you live in downtown Homs or something?

If it's got keyless entry and start then in some areas there's a high risk.

    A 6yo Fiesta won't have keyless entry/start.
