  • That’s  fine ,but if she’s old enough to have the fund (I know there is no choice it’s theirs to do what they want with ) then I suggest she is old enough to worry about supporting herself and you just need to top up her maintenance loan to the recommended max and let her get on with it .
suggest you stop paying for her phone if that’s her attitude .
I know it’s not pc or woke but my hand itches ,hearing about her !,
She is a tricky one.... it's very difficult to motivate ourselves to save to provide for her at uni when she's not willing to making any sacrifices or effort herself.  If we do save, we won't mention it to her, it's just so it's not such a culture shock for us next year.

  • I told my kids early on that I would pay for driving lessons then they would give me the 1k trust fund when they got it to pay me back. Sounds mean but 1k wouldn't buy them a car or go far on anything major. however we are in a much better place financially now so will let daughter keep it and get her to set it aside for uni costs, or to use to travel next summer for a couple of weeks.

Tbh I would account for her having that 1k into her/your budget for uni costs. She chooses to spend it on something else her choice.

Good luck with the extra shifts.
Yeah, I'm tempted to say to her when she accesses it next year that we've factored it into our calculations and up to her if she sticks to it or ends up caught short :)

  • With driving lessons, we said we'd pay for 5 (£180) and then she could pay for 5.  After she's had 10 lessons, we'll insure her on our car and pay for every other lesson and then her test.  We also paid for her provisional.  So far she hasn't bothered booking a single lesson :s She wanted the money up front and we said 'no' as she'd just spend it on other stuff

My daughter is loving driving, but it isn't for everyone, my hubby has never passed his test and said he hated every moment behind the wheel trying to learn!

My girl has her practical test booked. For the day after her 18th 🤦😂 didn't plan that we'll, but not a lot of choice had to take what was on offer due to the backlog. Hoping she passes first time so I get three months to start saving before the boy turns 17!

  • I can't imagine not being able to drive, love the freedom of it and find it very relaxing.
There's such a backlog!  Friends' children are having to wait months for their tests

  • Anyone watching Squid Game?  What an odd program!  Watching it with our 13yo as she wanted to see what the fuss was about.  We're 4 episodes in... started off with dubbed version and have switched to subtitles and it's slightly less weird now.  Kind of invested in seeing what happens, but also don't want to watch?!
That and GBBO are keeping us out of mischief

Planning half term, school hols are often a sticky point for me... I've booked week off and plans so far are:
    - cinema trip for younger 3 (£30)
    - theme park trip for older 3 - (£120)(I take each of them and a friend each and then collect them at end of day)
    - museum trip for all 5 (£50) - sounds dull, but it's a good museum, one of those that has something for everyone and a good arcade, all willingly agreed to go and there's a KFC nearby for lunch that may have swung the deal.  Plus with this museum, you pay once and the ticket lasts 12 months.  I love those type of places :)
    - NT house (kind of free as have membership)
    - meet up at a friend's house (£5 for cake donation) who handily has children the same age as mine... and they're all friends. Excellent!  They kind of pair off and the mums just chill.  My friend is lovely, she doesn't work and she thinks I'm absolutely mad for doing so.  Her children are all boys and her and her husband are very no nonsense and take no sh*t with their kids.  They also ahve no tolerance for uni - it's apprenticeships or work for theirs at 16 or 18.
So less than £200 budget for the week, sounds a lot, but it's a good budget for us and much less than I usually spend :D

I also love driving, I would hate not to be able too!

We watched squid game. We have always liked wierd Asian films though, have a good few from 20/30 yes ago and will always watch with subtitles rather than dubbing. We enjoyed it, but much preferred Alice in Borderland, similar idea but with a fantasy element so a little less gritty, but no less violent! Korean series on Netflix can be very good, I watched one called Black which I really enjoyed.

Your half term looks good. We have in laws visiting tomorrow, but I am working right through, as is hubby, I have Friday afternoon off to drive to Cornwall to look at a uni on sat but otherwise we won't be doing anything special. However with the amount of work I have lost this month we can't afford to do anything anyway! Me, hubby and the girl have a trip to a theme park booked in November but that was cheap as is a day hubby's work have booked out the whole park.
