A Rights Issue, is an offering of stock to existing shareholder based on how much stock they already own, usually offered at a discount price to the current share price.
Basically the companies involved intend to sell more stock to raise money, this will increase the number of shares in circulation and thus dilute the holdig of existing shareholders, the rights issue gives them the opportunity to increase thwier share holding at a favourable price to offset this dilution.
Unfortunately, companies making rights offerings have been seen as weak and have attracted a lot of selling and short selling often forcing their existing stock price below the price of the offering, in such a circumstance it would be more prudent for shareholders just to ignore the rights issue and buy in the open market if wishing to increase their holding.

Hi I am wanting to buy some shares, but have never actually done this before. Can anyone point me in a good place in which to buy please? I presume I just need to go to a broker?

Great book, i'm on my second time through it and have opened a self invested ISA just to get into trading.

I'm using The Share Centre to trade.

    This one's pretty good:
    www.iii.co.uk

It's £10 per trade (of any size) and there is no commission

Ive just joined landsdowne and found it really easy to use.

Bought a few HBOS shares in the hope I get lloyds tsb in exchange. Anyone heard anything about the likelyhood of the merger?

    Also got some premier foods.

Im only a small investor but want to learn about it before risking any more money
  • Latest I hear is the pension fund trustees causing merger problems. Its nothing new though and the pricing of the shares matches the merger as its been voted through
