Does the word Institutional in the fund's name indicate anything about the fund? For example, HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund Institutional Accumulation? It seems to be unavailable on all consumer platforms so i was wondering if the institutional meant it was for professionals only?

HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund Institutional is the exact same fund as HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund Retail. (Or any other suffix. I believe HSBC actually calls its institutional shareclass C and its retail shareclass A.)

"Institutional" refers not to a fund but a shareclass. Traditionally, each fund had retail shareclasses which were designed for retail investors, and institutional shareclasses. Retail shareclasses included the cost of a) administration and b) marketing and distributing the fund. The former would either be pocketed by HSBC if you held your fund directly with them, or paid to your platform if you used one. The latter would be paid on to IFAs and salesmen via commission. Institutional investors didn't need to be marketed to and paid for their own admin.

Nowadays both advised and DIY clients invest via platforms which invest in institutional shareclasses, with the cost of admin charged directly by the platform (i.e. AJ Bell's 0.2% or whatever they charge) and the cost of distribution charged directly by the IFA (if you have one, otherwise you don't pay it).

So most retail investors nowadays invest in institutional funds. The institution here is AJ Bell.

Thanks for the explanation but I'm still confused. The institutional version has a 0.03 OCF, whereas the class c and class s versions have 0.18 and 0.16 OCF respectively. Aj Bell have the c class for sale and I can't find the institutional anywhere for sale.

E: Charles Stanley, HL, iii, Best Invest etc all have the c class available.

Here's the morningstar page showing all the versions http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/funds/snapshot/snapshot.aspx?id=F00000TXY7&tab=4

Institutional share classes are typically only available to institutional investors such as pension funds, however as you are a private/retail investor you wont have access to the institutional share class.

On a side note, you may have access to institutional share classes if you have a workplace pension via an investment platform.

Sadly no access to institutional share classes through work. Would have been nice.

I'm building a spreadsheet to calculate various things, and was wondering how fees work. For example, Cavendish take the OCF out of the daily price of the fund, and then their platform fees are charged a month in arrears. How do i model that on my spreadsheet? Is it easier to simply subtract the full % of fees from the end of year total of contribution + returns, which I guess would be a slight overestimate?

    Hi all, another newbie question(!)

I took my shares from my work sharesave scheme and now i want to sell some of them.

I want a company that doesnt ripe me off for not using the account or an exit fee, I only want to use the account twice, sell some shares now and the rest next year.
I have settled on either SVS-XO or Fidelity, though I have heard that SVS do cold call.
My question is - do i have to sent them my share certificate?
How long does it take to get my money?

    Thanks

Are the differences between OEICs and UTs something a newbie investor should be worrying about? I'm trying to pick a bond holding to pair with Vanguard Global All Cap and I'm edging towards AXA Framlington Managed income but it's a UT where everything else I'm considering is an OEIC. Should I care?

The performance will largely rely on what its investing in. UT and OEIC are details to note, no reason to be especially apprehensive about UT that I've heard.

If you are investing large amounts take some advice professionally is a good idea
I would say look into it for your personal situation like taxes, etc.
Like an ETF and ETN sometimes the seemingly differences can matter in extremes.

You can send a cert after a sale with an immediate agreed price. Theres a process of clearing to include that. Then you receive the cash after its all settled, its not especially fast bit like cheques

Trustnet portfolio tool: if I try to add a new fund to a portfolio, and stipulate all 3 fields (number of units, date and cost) it won't update the values daily. If i only stipulate 2 fields, say units and date, then it is happy to update the figures daily. Is there any reason why? I ask because the actual numbers don't match the numbers the Portfolio generates automatically, presumably due to the OCF being paid on purchase. It's annoying knowing the numbers aren't quite right, although i guess they won't be a million miles away.

    I've been Money Tipped!
May I ask a quick question as I am getting nowhere.

Just want to buy/sell shares using paper certificates going into an office/bank with no complicated accounts etc

I used to use Lloyds but they want me to open some complex account.

Any ideas where I can wander in with a certificate and sell some shares?

The cheapest option is to transfer the certificate to the broker who will sell it at a standard fee. They transfer it in free

I think its the same amount of paperwork either way. If I see certificated dealing I'll post it here but I think it would cost about £50 to do so maybe
