The good news is that the shares are now worth 730p each.

The bad news is that there was a 1:100,000 consolidation in Oct last year, so I would assume that you either own one share (if fractional entitlements were rounded up) or none (if they were rounded to the nearest whole share).

If you held them in certificated form, I would have expected they would have written to you.

    LOL! What a disaster.

I'm building a portfolio for the first time with my S&S ISA allowance for this year which is 5200 because i've used my cash ISA allowance and will also use next years next week so i will be starting with 10300 to invest.

I have had a fantasy portfolio for 2 weeks with shares in Glaxo, Voda, Aviva, United Utilities and National Grid. (1k in each stock)

I also plan on buying 4 funds split evenly (1250 in each)

Any suggestions for things i should look at. I probably will look at US, Europe, Asia and Emerging markets to even out my UK holdings though technically they are international companies.

I need to do alot of research as i am a fairly defensive person i don't want to lose mroe than 10% in the first year so i can bail out if it fails.

Have a look at Trustnet. You will be able to see the funds most visitors are checking. Also, you will be able to see funds that are in the top of their sector.

I find the list of Alpha managers useful too.
Reading about two managers in First State led me to buy the FS Asia Pacific Leaders and their China fund and I am pleased with both.
Now, I am thinking of buying AXA Framlington UK Select Opps (Acc).

Thanks, i have trustnet on my list of research pages, though i need to combine recent performance and future potential (the difficult bit!)

My fantasy portfolio has done well this week, up £90 on my original investment but as the shares had i bought them when i started would have cost £105 in transaction costs i am still down. Not to worry - will check back every month or so.
  • can anyone please tell me how and where i can sell my paper share certs in Anglo Gold Ashanti ? when i bought they were on UK exchange now i beleive on Johanisburg listing. thanks Andrew

Try LloydsTSB Share Dealing where the shares are listed on the NYSE.

    http://sharedata.lloydstsbsharedealing.com/en/ourservices/whatweoffer/dealing/index.html

[1] Enter "AngloGold Ashanti" in the "Quote Search"
[2] On the next page alter "Market" on the drop down menu from LSE to NYSE
[3] Click the 'tick' on the right against "AngloGold Ashanti Ltd"
    [4] Then click "Certificated Dealing".

You then enter your details to see if they will deal for you. I don't know about settlement on an overseas market, but if it works I would hope you can opt for sterling, if that's what you want. :undecided

  • I just wondered if anyone could help explain the following paragraph, please. I'm just confused as to why the year 2014 is mentioned. Plain(est) English would be appreciated!

The Ordinary shares will be issued with Subscription shares attached on the basis of one Subscription share for every five Ordinary shares subscribed. Each Subscription share has the right, but not the obligation, to subscribe in cash for one Ordinary share on 31 August 2014 at the Subscription Price of 100 pence per share.

    Subscription share

Its an option to buy not an actual share. 2014 is when they expire, like an old cheque. Either you use it by then or its worthless.

Its like a token or half ticket, you have to pay the rest or you can decide to just sell it and never use it yourself

Is this linked to Polar capital technology trust

Do you hold the shares, or the sub shares?

If the subs, they're like warrants. Up to 31 Aug 14, you can buy or sell them as you wish, their price will be quoted on the LSE just like an ordinary share. Their price will be related to the ordinary shares, but much higher geared, ie a 20% increase in the ord shares might be reflected in a 200% increase in the sub shares.

If it were to become clear that the ord shares will be worth less then 100p by 31 Aug 14, the sub shares would become worthless.

On the other hand, if the ord shares were worth more than 100p on 31 Aug 14, the subs shares would entitle you to (and why would you not?) buy the ord shares at 100p - even if they were worth 1,000p.....

If you own the ord shares, the sub shares will not affect you at all.

No, it's not linked to Polar, but I'm still confused. I've been offered some shares which are about to float on the stockmarket for £1 each. If I buy some, would I not be able to sell them before 2014?
