I suppose one way would be to sell an amount of shares that will keep you under the CGT threshold this year & keep doing this each year until the issue is resolved.

That is exactly what I intend to do, I understand that the "sale" part will realise a CGT hit so would only sell a certain amount to utilise my annual allowance. So I think we have exactly the same understanding of what a Bed and ISA is :)
  • I've been left shares as part of an inheritance and don't really have the desire or time to follow the market. I also need some ready savings as although I'm working full-time just now and am not in debt (apart from the mortgage) I've no 'back-up' cash and have a number of things really needing done to the house.

What's the best (and cheapest) way to go about selling the shares fairly quickly? I've done a bit of reading on the subject but am getting more confused by the minute! Is there a relatively simple way round this? :(

    Thanks in advance!
    Marg :)

The executor will normally have done that as part of settling the estate and you will normally inherit the cash unless you specifically choose to have the shares made over to you.

Margret, unfortunately those 3 things don't sit well together.

If you want to quickly sell the shares then your best bet is to walk in to your bank and see if they can/will sell the shares (if you bank with one of the four major banks you should be ok to do this). This can be relatively expensive.

If you want the cheapest option then you will need to open an online dealing account, sell the shares, and close the account.
Personal Responsibility - Sad but True :D

Sometimes.... I am like a dog with a bone
  • Thanks guys - I don't remember there being an option for cash at any point when the estate was all getting dealt with - maybe I missed something along the way? And am with Bank of Scotland and also Alliance & Leicester so maybe a trip to BOS to at least discuss might be a first port of call? I thought BOS had something on their site re shares but can't seem to find it.

    1. Open a stockbroking account - make it a low cost one if you're only dealing with small amounts of money and one without an 'inactivity fee' - I use 1st direct and the execution seems pretty reasonable.

    2. Do some research on trackers - I tend to use iShares - and if you can, get an Acc fund or a SCRIP divididend to roll up the distributions (assuming you don't want the income for whatever reason).

As a rule of thumb, I aim to keep total costs (include the cost to sell as well as the ETF fee below 1%).

You'll probably want to use your ISA allowance too if you haven't already.

    3. Buy the security you want.

    4. Make money (hopefully).

On a slight tangent, if you're a student, and this is long-long term money, you may want to consider a FTSE All Share or FTSE All Small tracker, small caps generally do better over the long long term than large/mega caps.
ref your reply to Vincent, I am new to this business too. I would like to invest a couple of grand in a couple of STOCKS for my grandchildren to let sit for the long term. Would not want to charged for inactivity. I know that in the USA they can invest in companies using a DRIP system - (Direct Reinvesment Plans). Do you know if this is available in the UK?
    Thanks
  • iii and halifax both do drip and they charge 1% each time.

With halifax you can ask them to give you a sharebuilder account which is especially good for tiny amounts of shares because they let you hold and buy tenths of a share which isnt normally possible.

Some FTSE shares cost over 30 pounds each and with quarterly dividends you would not normally have enough to reinvest it except with this special measure
