Hi.
Anyone know if under the new MOT LED sidelights will be a fail? They were not LED originally and I have a halogen headlight.
The LED just makes me more visible on the road on a motorbike.
Cheers.

I've got (replacement) LED sidelights in my car at the moment. MOT'd it in October with absolutely no comment at all from the tester.0

Motorcycle?
Then this is the relevant bit of the tester manual.

looks like the bikes covered then.0

Recently replaced the number plate lights on my 207 with white LED bulbs with awesome results. Going to get some for the side lights too as they are the same size bulbs.0

Were they the Philips ones?0

They came from ebay loose in a jiffy bag no idea who made them. They are these... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CANBUS-LED-NUMBER-PLATE-BULBS-PEUGEOT-207-307-407-308/230590020027?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l26490 -
The resistors required to make them acceptable to the multiplexing negate any power consumption advantages - they mean that the current consumption is the same as a normal filament bulb, giving the same amount of heat to dissipate. That may contribute to a shortened life.
Quite why people want ludicrously bright numberplate light bulbs is another question entirely. 480lm is damn near 10x the light output of a typical filament equivalent.

I wouldn't say they were super bright like those folk who drive around with super bright head lights that blind you. They just give off a nice white light.
Didn't get them to save power either.0 -
People get the number plates done for looks. They look better that's all. Since at the end of the day so long as the plate is illuminated it's legal. It's behind you so it doesn't really matter how it's illuminated so the switch to LEDs is looks.
I do remember reading a comment a while ago when someone said someones number plate bulbs were 'blinding' them. I've seen some pretty bright number plate bulbs in my time but 'blinding'? No, never.
LED bulbs up front for the sidelights is another matter though. I've had the standard W5W halogen bulbs and they're pretty weak. I bought a tower LED bulb, forget how many SMDs are in it, but it's brighter than your standard halogen without being blinding, so in those situations where you don't need dipped beam but you do need sidelights then they're much better, in my opinion.0 -
Given that you shouldn't be driving around using your sidelights, is it even remotely relevant?
If you need lighting to be seen, turn your flippin' headlights on.0
