MBNA have always been good to me and I've used them for ~ 8 years. Difference is probably due to me not lying on my application.

I think there might be an area here on the MSE forum for rants and this thread should be moved there IMO.

Agreed. Have been with them for twenty years. In fact they gave me my very first credit card.
    Customer service always helpful.
A shame they don't have a fee free card for overseas travel. So I only use them for UK purchases these days.

Point is - they want me to prove that I work in the company that I stated on the phone so I can continue using the card, but why should I (except for the Cifas - thanks for the advice)?

Because you may want credit in the future, either from MBNA or someone else.

I have to agree with the majority.
    1. You provided false details on your application.
    2. MBNA (by the sounds of it) contacted your employer (as they have every right to do) and are told you didn't work there at the time of your application, confirming that false information was supplied.
    3. You then confirmed this yourself on, no doubt, a recorded call, further confirming that you supplied incorrect information.

Now the next question is: Did you put your current salary in the salary box, or did you decide to put your previous jobs salary too? How did they contact your previous employer? did you put their address and phone number too?

If you then drop everything and walk away, this could appear to suggest intentional fraud even more.

As others have said, a pre-emptive call or a letter stating the facts and reasoning will provide valuable evidence to fall back on should MBNA considered this a fraud situation. If they are happy with your new information supplied let them send you the card (in effect clearing your name) and then cancel it afterwards like anyone else so that you will have left with a clean record.

    Not surprised with your experience.

Wouldn't touch MBNA with a million mile long barge pole.

Not dealing them will be the best thing you could ever do in life.

Don't you just love it when someone posts something like this without giving any reasons or explanation for the rant.

While I do not doubt that some people can have had problems, as others have stated in the thread in the over twenty years I have had a MBNA credit card which is paid off in full every month I have never had a single problem.

I didn’t think to put the numbers in words either, good idea, but technically that is also a lie. So in any case I would have lied.

No, it's not. No matter whether you write, for example, AB-1-2 or AB-one-two, when you say it, it's exactly the same thing.

My UK employer, when written out in full, had a fairly long name, and would almost always exceed the number of characters I could put in the box, so I'd put the initial of the last two names instead (Employer A B, instead of Employer Alpha Bravo).

What I didn't do, is give them a completely different name in order to fit, if I'd done that, that would be lying, there's the difference.

Anyway, what's done is done, I echo what others have said though, don't ignore this, as CIFAS/N Hunter or other fraud markers could be catastrophic for you financially. If you can still prove that you did work at the other employer, and explain your reasoning, hopefully they'll realise you weren't trying to pull a fast one and go easy (although unfortunately they have every right not to). Either way, hope you resolve it :o

Interesting, MBNA's other seven million cardholders seem to be getting on with them just fine.

I've personally been a MBNA multi-cardholder for over ten years, and compared to a lot of UK card issuers, theirs is a well run, efficient operation - no issues with reward points not posting, decent app and website, customer services department which actually resolves issues, and a wide range of products catering to a range of needs (purchases, BTs, etc.).

OP could do a lot worse than MBNA.

    It is more than lying.
It is fraud pure & simple.

Oh come now. Haven't we had enough outraged posts?

MBNA asks for an employer's name but then doesn't allow one with numbers. A glance at Companies House, and you can see that there are many companies with numeric names.

As for changing ABC123 into ABC One Two Three. Well, if we are going to be pedantic, that's a lie too. They are written differently even if pronounced the same. Same as Me Too Ltd, Me Two Ltd. They would be two different companies. The OP put down a real company, albeit the previous employer.

MBNA should get it right. Short of not applying, the OP made a choice. Perhaps not the best one, and things have unravelled.

As for fraud "pure and simple".... Fraud requires a misrepresentation with dishonest intent. Yes, a lie. But I wouldn't say fraud.

    Hello everyone, first post here.

Sorry if this is the wrong place, or it will not be relevant, but I am just outraged and wanted to complain somewhere.

Applied for a MBNA card for a balance transfer roughly two months ago (they had an excellent 0% balance transfer offer for 3 years). Everything went fine, got accepted with the credit limit of 8400,00. During the application I was unable to put correctly the employers name as the website for some reason does not allow to put numbers in the company name, so I instead provided my previous employer as that one did not have any numbers in the name of the company (This will become relevant later on).

I did not receive my card during first 3-4 weeks, so I ordered a new one. The card came, I activated it, everything went well and smooth. Then I got my account suspended for some reason three times during two weeks, even though I did not use it once. Had to call MBNA, and first time they said that it was due to the fact that I did not log off online services, then it was due to suspicious activity (what activity, I didn't have any activity on my account, and did not make a single purchase?).

Long story short, I have my balance transfer offer only for 60 days, so it is valid only up until 13th of December, so on Monday 10th December after I got my account un-suspended again I decided to do a balance transfer. Sure thing, the account was suspended again after the application. I called MBNA, they connected me through to the fraud department. I spoke with the lady, answered all their security questions, but when they asked for my employer details I of course provided my current employer (not remembering that they do not accept for some reason numbers in the application form for the name of the company). So sure thing, that got my account suspended again until I send them by post my bank statement for last three months and my PAYE slips for last three months as well. And I cant send them by email as the fraud department does not have an email account (seriously?). Even more, they called my previous employer and asked if I work there.

So here comes the worst experience part ever. I have my offer of balance transfer until tomorrow 13th of December, which I am unable to use because the card never arrived in the first place, then the account was suspended THREE times during two weeks. So now I can't produce bank statement in paper form from the bank for the last three months as I have them all online, so I need to go to the bank to order one, then wait it through post, ask for PAYE slips (my bad, throw them out) from my employer, send to them everything by post, and then my account will be unblocked in 28 days, and will be absolutely useless as the offer will be expired. Now why the hell would I want the card then? Tried to complain to customer services, as obviously my great credit score is affected due to the application for the card. Nothing they can do.

Great MBNA. Will recommend you to everyone. Complete shambles.

    Regards,
    Diana

You did tell an untruth on your application and applications are not meant to be a work of fiction but fact.

No doubt they checked with Hunter to verify the details were correct and if previous applications you had submitted for credit showed a difference employer then this may have been a real concern.

Also if you had issues entering the company name you could have easily phoned MBNA for help and could have then processed the application over the phone. Perhaps something to remember in the future for other credit applications.

I'm not sure MBNA are to blame for this situation.

I have been with them for about 12 years and have them an excellent company.
