I don't think they do - in fact the parenthetical part of the first sentence is reinforced by the last.
It doesn't make any sense at all. But lots of people do do it.0 -
I'll post the exact same thing I said on a thread this time last year..Red-Squirrel wrote: »I've read that boxing day is one of the busiest traffic days for rightmove.
Me and a lot of other people (especially those that frequent this board) look at Rightmove regularly even though we're not actually thinking of moving. There's a higher chance of me doing this on Boxing day than on a normal work-day and I'm sure the same goes for a large number of browsers.Slithery wrote:It's not just Rightmove though.
Nearly all websites have a surge of traffic on Boxing Day, as people are off work and trying out all the new tech they got for Christmas.
Everyone that uses the Rightmove app on their new phone will be installing the application, this also causes a spike in traffic that has nothing to do with the housing market.
This can't be necesarily be construed as more people wanting to purchase property.0 -

Part 1. It doesn't make any sense, there are no fees to pay (unless you choose) if you list at Christmas. There is very little time sunk in the process.
Part 2. Doesn't stop people talking themselves out of buying/selling for some imaginary reason. This is repeated by others creating a self fulfilling prophecy.
5 stars, great contribution Another Joe. Thread changing input.0 -
If you are looking for a house, you're looking all the time imo. We had three years of searching, ending up viewing and making an offer there and then on a house three weeks before Xmas last year. It had been on since October though and we had missed it as it wasn't directly in our search area. It was a death and a friend had inherited it so they were desperate for a quick sale knowing it was the slowest time of the year. It also allowed us to get away with a very cheeky offer and negotiate on the survey results too.0

The OP started off by replying specifically to the comment;
“ Terrible time to sell a house" by saying "that doesn't make any sense (for reasons X,Y, Z)".
and then finished by saying (I paraphrase) "since lots of people do think its a terrible time of year to sell a house it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and so it actually is a terrible time of year to sell a house"0 -
Must be different where you live then... Ex council houses where I'm from tend to have much more spacious rooms than newer builds which makes them quite desirable for a lot of people.
Houses aren't valued on who used to live in them generally.
I think you'll find they are.
People who buy ex Council houses generally have to be prepared to live on a Council Estate with all the stigma that involves (always has and always will IMO). Therefore, they are cheaper by association.0 -
Agree. A lot of them are 'uglier' too. Not saying I wouldn't buy a 'less pretty' house, just that they can usually be spotted a mile off and it will put people off. I've always known them to be cheaper/less desirable, but have had plenty of friends buy them over the years. Often good sizes with lots of pluses generally.Cheeky_Monkey wrote: »I think you'll find they are.

Occasionally.
Glad I did too. When I was about to start extension/renovation work, I happened on an ad from a lady who was 'changing my tiles to red.'
Got 600 free concrete tiles that matched my common-as- muck brown roof.
(You can now see her house from about 2 miles away!:rotfl:)0
